Lovely Bedsits. Close to Fishermans wharf, we were disappointed that the Italian Restaurant downstairs had gone out of business, there are not many places to eat right close by. There are however 2 Supermarkets a min from the door which is fab. Now the room we booked as a triple and it was so small we had to leave our... More

Pro: - Close to Fishermans Wharf, Coit Tower, Lombard etc. - Reasonably prices (for beeing SF) - Calm neighbourhood Con: - Extremely small rooms with a distinct smell of mould and without daylight - No safe available (made me carry my laptop for three days) - Old beds, hard as a rock

We stayed 2 nights at San Remo hotel/hostel. The rooms and the hostel itself were very charming. You feel like being back in the time. The room (with sink) and the shared bathrooms and restrooms were very clean all the time. Sharing the bathroom was not a problem because there was always one or more available. Location is very good.... More

My husband and I stayed at this fabulous hotel and it made our time in San Francisco. It is a very unique hotel with attention to detail being the key to the great service we received. The little things like the welcome gifts in your room, the paper to put your feet in after the shower, and many other tiny... More

Very good location, close to Pier 39. Rooms are small but clean and you need to share bathroom and sink with other people. Decorations make you feel like home.

I had some concerns about staying in a European style hotel with shared bath and toilets, and the rooms are more eccentric than plush, but this character-rich, century-old establishment is immaculate, and the location couldn't be better. For those who love to walk and explore the city, there are plenty of enticing destinations in all directions. Cable car is a... More

On first appearances the hotel feels old and neglected, but after a little while you begin to notice that the hotel is very clean is styled as it was 100 years ago. It is located one block from a supermarket and 2 blocks from the Powell St trolley car turning station, it is also on the same street as fishermans... More

As a young woman serving on board a United States Navy ammunitions carrier a chance to get off of the ship for weekends and such is a pleasure. Being stationed in the Bay Area it was quite expensive to say the least unless you ventured outside of the city and then most times you sacrificed quailty, shopping and adventure. But... More

A slice of old San francisco in a very handy position. A short stroll from fisherman's wharf, bicycle hire places, Alcatraz tours, dining district etc. Small rooms with limited amenities but clean and quaint. I'd stay again.

The first thing I noticed about the San Remo was the smell...Of cleanliness. We normally stay at 3 & 4 star resorts but don't want to pay an arm and a leg in SF. We paid $69 (each roon) for adjoining rooms where each had a sink. The bathroom toilets and showers (which are separate) are very clean and didn't... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
