I was traveling on business to SF and my company wasn't reimbursing me for the trip so I was looking for a low cost hotel option. The Opal fit the bill! This was my first time to SF so I relied heavily on the comments from this site and the comments were favorable. I had a room with a king... More

When we checked in the staff member was frosty faced and we were obviously a bore and a chore, but on other occasions the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was quiet, had a queen bed and space for suitcases. The bathroom was clean with nice towels, soaps etc. There was no fridge, but ice in a machine in... More

Dear HebH Thank you for choosing The Opal during your recent trip to San Francisco. We are grateful for your feedback and positive rating. However I was disappointed to learn that you were greeted with such frosty faces upon check in. Definitely not our best side ever to present, especially when you're first getting here. We'll work on a more genuine... More

The location is not bad, but many homeless are around it by the night time , but i didnt had any problem even though i was travelling alone. Staff was very helpful and cool with me. The room was big and clean , bathroom as well. The only problem i faced was with room was just at the side of... More

A fine budget hotel to stay at if you go in with eyes wide open. Know that the location is not the best. During our four day stay, I twice witnessed people relieving themselves outside the hotel. We wandered towards Union Square thinking that it was a nice walk.........we walked through the heart of the Tenderloin. Be careful and very... More

Dear Emwoerks, Thank you for choosing to stay at The Opal Hotel San Francisco and for taking time to share feedback with us. Our location does present a good slice of San Francisco urban life duality with fine high end car dealerships and restaurants alongside us on Van Ness Avenue on one end and just one block over on Polk... A lot of Tripadvisor reviews on The Opal have been negative, which is my main motivation to write this review. I stayed here along with a friend in a two-bed room for 3 nights, and found it had comfort (decent size beds with comfy pillows), really good value for money (we each had to pay $206 total for 3 nights... A friend and I stayed here late-Sept and were excited to fit in as much as possible. Although we had a general itinerary for the duration that we were there, we thought the front desk would be able to assist us in quick/easy directions with taking transit and any tips that I am very sure they are aware of. Rather,... More

Dear sandyto143, I sincerely apologize for what sounds like a horrible experience. This is NOT indicative of what type of hotel or Guest Service professionals we strive to be. Again, please do accept my deepest apology on how your stay seemed to have gone awry with us. I would like to most certainly make this up. At the very least... More

We selected this hotel based on price and what I thought was a good location. I didn't know but this hotel is located at the border of "Tenderloin", which is notoriously populated with homeless, druggies and drunks. Although we were never troubled we didn't like to walk through it. It was very hard to avoid though as you naturally want... More

Stayed here for 4 days, 3 nights for a conference in Oct. The city was sold out for another conference and I was concerned that the only places available for less than $500/night would be sketchy, dingy places. I was very pleasantly surprised with how nice The Opal was--clean, cozy, with a quaint B&B feel. Definitely not a dingy cheap... More

Very close to Downtown San Francisco and Chinatown (literally walking distance). You'll need a cab to the Golden Gate Bridge, but that's like anywhere in San Francisco. Mel's diner is next to the hotel, and is a tasty, affordable place to eat. Breakfast here is quite dodgy, and there's hardly anything left when you get there at 7.30 am. I'd... More
