This is our third stay at the Phoenix. It has such a great atmosphere. The rooms are always clean, and a nice size. The grounds are tropical and the rooms feel like you are on a tropical vacation with their bamboo, and ceiling fans. Since we are members of the Joy of Life Club (a free benefit) we get some... Really a fun place to stay. Wonderful restaurant on site. We were probably the oldest guests in residence and dining--but felt welcomed and comfortable. Had some concerns about the noise from the patio bar--but it ended amazingly promptly at around 11 PM! Easy walking (away from the Tenderloin) toward VanNess--multi-screen indie movie theatre nearby--many dining options. We were staying because... More

This was my fourth stay here and I feel like this hotel is an old friend. The grounds are terrific- a tiny tropical-artsy oasis on the edge of the tenderloin. The staff is friendly and helpful, and this attidtude even seems to rub off on interactions with the other guests. The breakfast buffet is tasty and fresh, with quality coffee... More

Great atmosphere. The friendly environment that this place creates is unbeatable. The Bambudda lounge is awesome. The location is near the Tenderloin district, but if you are street smart you will be fine outside the hotel. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because my room needed some renovations. But I was told that the hotel... More

I travel to San Francisco a lot and have had more than my share of less-than-desirable hotel stays there. But the Phoenix - I was very impressed. The courtyard/swimming pool area is beautiful and very relaxing. The room was spacious, clean and nicely designed. The shower was awesome. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The bed was comfy.... More

Prior to staying at the Pheonix in August 2005, I read reviews on this site that warned of nighttime noise and other problems. While the place is famed as a rock-n-roll hotel (and the earnestness of the staff's rocker "look" is a little funny/silly), we didn't find it too loud at all. However, it's not the kind of place you... More
