Stayed Aug 10-14. We were pleasantly surprised at our stay considering the comments we had read. There was no construction. Staff were friendly and competent. We stayed on the 6th floor in a lovely renovated room. We loved the toiletries and appreciated the hairdryer. We met people from all over the world at the Buchanan. The flavoured water in the... First floor room traffic, garbage noise all night. Smells from kitchen. Still not finished with renovations. The noise factor is off the charts. Had the reservation for several months and this is the best room available? Cutting our trip short. Also poor lighting. This hotel does not represent the Kimpton name we are use to from previous stays with that... More

Hello, Rose K, I totally understand that the first floor is not for everyone. Some people love it because many of the rooms have outdoor access, while others do mention some of the factors you listed. I hope we could have a "second chance" to see you back here -- perhaps on a different floor, happy to set that up!... More

My husband and I stayed here for five days in mid-August 2015. The location is great, but the hotel overall is sub-par and needs many improvements to be worthy of the Kimpton name. PROS: The location is great. I've stayed in hotels in downtown San Francisco, which can be problematic because streets are crowded, and you can easily turn a... More

Hi, there, NYC_ParkSloper, I am happy to hear that you fell in love with our neighborhood just as I did! We are actually making good headway in some of the areas you mention, including stiffer shower knobs, softer desk chairs, outdoor patio furntiure, and so on. We have already received our new signature Japanese shibori-print robe which will fit that... More

You can imagine that I was a bit hesitant after I made my reservations for the Hotel Tomo and saw that the name had changed and that negative reviews were pouring in. I was very nervous that I would have a bad experience. And there are definitely some growing pains happening with this transition. But overall, this is a good... More

Thank you, Vivian S, I loved your review. It is so true that though the current look of the hallways is not a perfect first impression, "who cares?" since the rooms and lobby (where you actually spend your time) are so beautifully redone. We're thrilled with the way the designers worked their magic to completely reinvent the property. And, yes,... More

My first stay at a Kimpton after hearing lots of hype. Yikes. I can get better rooms at the Best Western. (1) There was some sort of pellet animal food on the bathroom floor. Several pieces. I picked some up and left them on the back of the toilet with a note "These were on bathroom floor." Those pieces were... More

Hello, MemoryTraveler, and thank you for coming over to Kimpton from the "big boxes." I can see our first impression didn't match our reputation, so I definitely want to look into this. The restaurant tenant here is supposed to close by 10:30pm, so I'd love to follow up on that, and research which housekeeper was aassigned to your room. I... More

We booked this hotel expecting Hotel Tomo and its Japanese style but we were not disappointed to hear it had changed to a Kimpton hotel. The positives: the staff were friendly and helpful at all times; superb, quiet location near Japantown and Fillmore and it was easy to get around by bus; the room was large with a balcony and... Hello and thank you, missbbristol_England, I will take it as a huge victory that we earned 3 stars in spite of that wretched spate of hot water challenges. I am pleased to say that situation is behind us, and I hope you'll be back for a five-star experience! More

Kimpton is struggling in San Francisco, losing several of its properties to a labor dispute. The Buchanan is one of the few Kimpton hotels left in the city, and it is so subpar it will only destroy what little goodwill Kimpton has left. The hotel looks and feels like a youth hostel with a fresh coat of paint. Grimy outdoor... More

Hello, biztraveler1110, and thanks for being such a loyal Kimpton fan. To be blunt, I was pretty alarmed by your experience. At first, I assumed you must have stayed with us prior to the renovation. Our furnishings have met with really great reviews, especially the plush custom leather crescent sofa and twirling tea lounge chairs. And though the hallways are... More

Hoping they can smooth out the many rough edges, as I am normally not let down by Kimpton. Check in and any interaction with front desk has been average, but not accommodating whatsoever. Room is freshly renovated (furniture, carpet and paint) but not maintained by housekeeping whatsoever. The incidental charge for $100 per day is insane since there is no... More

Hi, Code_Secret, and thanks for all your Kimpton loyalty. I want to reassure you (and the public) that we do NOT charge a daily fee of any kind in addition to the nighty rate. At check-in, we do *authorize* a credit card to ensure there is a guarantee of payment on file (in case a guest chooses to bill through... More

We were very disappointed during a recent stay at the Buchanan. It seems that this hotel is undergoing renovations and has recently become part of the Kimpton boutique hotels. Our 2 night stay was plagued with plumbing problems--no water when we checked in, 1st day shower water was difficult to regulate and often too hot, 2nd day shower there was... More

Hi, Leslie J, I definitely regret those unforeseen glitches with our unveiling upon the conclusion of the renovation/re-launch here. The hot water issue was a curveball and a half, and all I can say at this point is that I am delighted it has become a thing of the past, and I hope to make it up to you in... More

When I stayed here twice last year it was called hotel tomo and was a cool kimpton hotel with anime themed wall murals in a great neighborhood. I am sure the neighborhood is the same but not sure if anything else has changed since they renamed it the Buchanan. But the people who worked here were nice and the location... More

Thanks, Jen and Tom! I'm glad you loved the place even before all the upgrades. I hope you'll come back to explore even more of this fantastic neighborhood and enjoy the sleek new design from NICOLEHOLLIS. Meanwhile, I'll share your kind words with the team :). More
