The location of this hotel is great. And now it is under new ownership and management with the Kimpton Group of Boutique Hotels. It has been totally renno'd and is very boutiquey, room decor is black and white, beds are oh so comfy. Free WiFi but no desk, just a table but lots of outlets, nice 36/42" flat screen TV.... More

Thanks so much, TravelGnat! We live for those 5-star reviews and happy guests :). We did definitely appreciate your feedback and are working on those finishing touches. Luggage racks are now in all rooms, and some cool shibori-print (kimono inspired) custom robes will be in all rooms later this month. Hope you can come back soon to enjoy them. Thanks! More

The Tomo ...now the Buchanan...is a nice place and is centrally located to a lot of things to see in San Francisco. Japan Town is a mellow and quiet part of the city. There are interesting shops in the area and good Japanese food all around. Rooms are nice and have a deck to look out from. Bed was comfortable,... More

Thanks, SiriusSkier23, I'm glad you loved the new look of the Buchanan, and we'll give the team a high five for their friendliness as well. It has been exciting for us to bring the Kimpton look and feel to this new location. It is unique in that it's near everything but totally laid back and local, without the tourist trap... More

I’ve wanted to stay at Tomo in San Francisco’s Japantown for years. The colorful wall murals and funky furniture really appealed to my sense of fun. I arrived at Tomo and at first, could not find a way into the building. The lobby was under construction and entry could only be gained through the parking garage. The front desk attendant... More

Hi, MJanean, and thanks for coming to see us as we were transforming from the Tomo to the Buchanan. I see you might have been the very first guest to experience your new room giving those water issues - whoopsie daisies! I'm glad that you brought that to our attention and they resolved the shower issue for you. I'll have... More

Our room was on floor 1, which meant we were actually under street level - no view! The wifi is 12.99 - why are hotels still charging for wifi? So that's the negatives out of the way. The room was big, the bed was comfortable, the cleaning was meticulous. There's a restaurant in the hotel serving really good Japanese food.... More

Room was spacious, clean and facing the courtyards. Although the hotel is located in a nice and quite neighborhood (Japan town) not too far from the city center, they are still renovating some of their floors and hence it can be very noisy at times.

Pros: accommodating staff, very clean, comfortable beds, quiet at night, and parking garage on premise Cons: three of four rooms had plumbing issues, construction workers blocked our cars in the parking garage and took up most of the parking spaces with their cars and trash, refrigerator froze our baby's food and had no thermostat knob, construction was a major inconvenience... Hello, BS0018, and thanks for being a loyal Kimpton fan. I'm sorry about the construction workers getting in the way, and I'd love to look into the plumbing and fridge items if you could drop me a line. (It seems you may have mentioned the issues to us while you were here, though, as I have not heard further complaint,... More

Even though the hotel is undergoing a remodel, the rooms are quiet and beautiful, the staff very helpful, and parking and location are great. The rooms are modern and zen-like, super clean and comfortable. Great place to stay in the City.

Wooohooo, thanks so much 805mommy! We love to see those five stars and happy campers. I am really happy with the way the rooms turned out, too. I think the design weaves in the neighborhood nicely and shows off the spaciousness of the rooms, too. Hope to see you again soon! More

The location worked for everything we wanted to do. Japan Town was very interesting. We enjoyed shopping at what I called the Yen store, which was like a dollar store with everything Japanese. All kinds of great little kitchen gadgets, toys, etc. We randomly popped in one of the close by restaurants for lunch and had an excellent meal.

Thanks a lot, KellyD! I'm glad that the stay here in Japantown was fun for the grown-ups and kids both. I think you're talking about the Daiso store in the Japan Center a block away? It is sooo addictive and fun. I hope you got to stroll Fillmore Street too and check out some of the shops and eateries there,... More

In my past travels to San Francisco, I've never been to the Japantown section of the city. The redesign of the Kimpton Hotel Tomo lured me to try a new hotel and an area I wouldn't have thought of exploring previously. As you walk around, the two- and three-story buildings are a world away from the skyscrapers less than a... More

Thanks so much, Lee H. Your review captured just what I hope our loyal Kimpton guests will appreciate about the hotel, with the top two best features being the special location and the room size. I am thrilled that the designers created rooms that feel like a trendy San Francisco residence -- except larger ;). We'll pass along the feedback... More

Kimpton recently acquired this property in Japantown, a great neighborhood for walking. It is in the process of being redone. My room was large, bright and simply but elegantly furnished. The bed is super comfortable. Lather amenities (left over from JDV? I hope not!). The staff is working around some inconveniences, but are cheerful, helpful and quite thoughtful. It is... More

Thanks, wineknut! I have just shared your review with the team, and I know they will be really happy to know that you enjoyed their friendly service and the stay overall.
