I'm really not that picky when it comes to hotels, but this was even below my standards...we stayed at a very simple motel the night before (motel 6) and even that was 10 times nicer and cleaner than the Monarch. Our room smelled like the rest of the neighbourhood - pee. The floors werr very unclean and it was so... More

We've made several dozen treks to SF over the past 14 years to escape the Central Valley summer time heat, and the Monarch has proved to be a good, basic value hotel at the fringe of the Tenderloin neighborhood that we have used several times, although this is the first time we've actually reviewed it. The hotel had been updated... More

We have been here for a week in July. We had a room overlooking Geary street on the 5th floor ... The room had the basic necessities ... Nothing posh but it was ok and very affordable ... The hotel is located in a great location.... It's in walking distance to union square about 5-7 minutes walk and it's gives... More

Stayed for 3 nights and we were a bit worried about arriving.....but really shouldnt have been. We found a 24hr parking garage up the road (Japan Garage) and it cost us $61 for our stay. YES the area is rough, and after walking around the city, it's not the worst! A lot of homeless, but they dont bother you, we... More

The only good thing about this hotel is that it is within walking distance to all the sight seeing and attractions. Decent cafés and restaurants surround but is kind of in a sketchy part of town especially after 3pm to be exact. They didn't have a key to the vault and said they would have a key made the next... The staff was not very friendly. Zero parking available. You had to pay 48.00 to park your car. Nothing like gun shots right outside to make you feel safe. We will not stay there again. Just awful!!!!

Bad neighborhood, far from everything, and expensive compared to the quality of the hotel. The good thing is there are good resturants in the tenderloin area a bit south of the hotel. My advice is to find another hotel.

DO NOT ON ANY ACCOUNT CONSIDER THIS PLACE! We had a similar problem to another reviewer that our previous hotel booking fell through and we had to book this one at the last minute (on the same day as our arrival). We didn't find the area itself too bad (it is the tenderloin) but the service was horrific. The room... More

We booked this hotel based on price, location and availability of 2 beds. Most of the other reviews here talk about the location - well, yeah it is a bit of a dodgy area. However, the homeless/street people in the area were pretty harmless. If you are visiting from pretty much any big city in the world, this isn't all... More

We booked the Monarch Hotel at the last moment after our previously booked accommodation in San Francisco was cancelled at the last minute. WHAT A MISTAKE! The hotel is located in the Tenderloin area of SF. Although it looks very close to many of the tourist spots, this part of Geary Street is heavily populated by homeless people, who are... More
