Some of these reviews are definitely outdated - Ignore anything more than a couple of months old. Here's the current lowdown: The Red Victorian recently came under new management, who are a young and refreshing group - The rooms are all open but the renovation is so fresh they're still putting finishing touches on the common area. I suspect this... More

I loved staying at the Red Victorian Bed and Breakfast. My friend and I needed a place to stay in San Francisco for a night and this was one of the only places left to stay (they had a cancellation). Our room was lots of fun, it had a very unique decor. We had a shared bathroom, but we never... More

This place might have been good 20 years ago. Don't arrive after dark, they lock the front door (no front desk) and if you're lucky you may be able to figure out how to access the lock box for the key to get it. You can call the after-hours person who lives there but he won't be happy to see... More

Stayed here last summer - my daughter loved it!! All the rooms are smallish and hippie theme- the bathrooms are super cool!! And communal- it's def a laid back everyone welcome vibe here- free coffee & breakfast downstairs is nice- not sure if I like Haight St at night- and parking can be a real issue

The Red Victorian is the place to stay if you're coming to San Francisco to soak up what's left of the hippie vibe on Haight Street. It's a quirky, comfortable guest house that's been going for decades and caters for those who can cope with shared bathroom facilities and eclectic decor in exchange for its proximity to the most famous... Noisy street sounds all night. Building is unsound...uneven floors...would not want to be in this building during an earthquake. Lukewarm shower. Will never stay here again. It was an awful experience.

The staff at the Red Victorian Bed & Breakfast is lovely -- warm, friendly, and welcoming. The rooms are reasonable size for the price and the bathroom down the hall is clean. They make a huge effort to be environmentally friendly, which I appreciate. The bed was comfortable. The breakfast was good, although they start late (9 a.m. for me... More

I am surprised by the handful of negative reviews posted here. The Red Vic is one of the most interesting places I have visited. Yeah....it's old and turn of the century ( 19th to 20th, that us) and on the hectic and colorful Haight (not a ghetto as someone ill-informed has commented). The room was quaint and charming and colorful.... More

we have been at the Red Vic. 2 years in a row, and both times have been the best. Besides that S. F, is our favorite city in the U.S. to visit, the Red Vic. makes it even better. Love the themes of the rooms, that makes us want to come back the next year so we can stay in... More

We stayed in the Earth room for our last 2 nights in San Francisco. The room was nice and clean, average size. No bathroom in the room, we knew that at time of booking. There is only 1 shower per floor, you can't take a shower when you want as most likely there is somebody in. The building is old... More

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
Haight-Ashbury
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
