The hostel is located at Ellis and Larkin. Due to the large homeless population one should avoid walking on Ellis Street. A better way to reach the hostel is taking Geary and then Larkin if you come from Union Square or taking Larkin if you come from Civic Center. What I liked most about the HI City Center was the... more

This hostel isn't in the centre of the action, but it is easy to reach by bus and is downhill from the California cable car. The streets to the east and south are full of hobos and to the east are strip joints - but these end pretty quickly after a couple of blocks. To the north is Russian Hill... more

We were a little unsure on what to expect from our first stay at a Hostel, but we shouldn't of worried, it was an excellent experience! We had booked a 'private room' that included our own bathroom, I’d encourage anyone with the extra $ to go for this. The room was basic, a bed, clock radio and a dresser, and... more

Love the hostel property but found the staff to be quite rude and uncaring, especially Jessie! Unfortunately I arrived from travelling for 18 hrs so really tired but due to shift change I had to wait approx 20mins, and unfortunately that meant I had to deal with Jessie, who's attitude never improved my whole stay and I saw her every... more

Forget the location, it is nothing to be worried about. Ok, there are quite a few homeless people there, but not one of them had asked me anything or bothered me. Of course it is not advisible to walk around late at night. The place is clean, very cosy and there are lots of great fellow travellers around. The staff... more

The hostel was really well maintained, en suite bathrooms for the dorms, planty of communal areas and it really felt safe inside, but the location is in the middle of the tenderoin, so there are a lot of homeless people/drug dealers around after dark. Its probably fine if you are with somone, but being a femal travlelling alon it felt... more

I can only echo the thoughts of the other reviewers. This place is clean, friendly, inviting, with knowledgeable and helpful staff. I stayed in a private room, which must have only recently been remodelled, as it was better than a few hotel rooms I've been in. The common areas are nice, and it was nice to finally get some free... more

We stayed here for three nights. Arriving from Australia and going straight to the hostel, we had been concerned about it being in a 'colourful' part of town, but we should not have worried. Stick to Larkin St and Geary St to get there, avoid the northern streets and it is absolutely fine. There are certainly derro's about but aren't... more

We stayed here for a total of six nights during September 2006 and had a really great time. I stayed in one of the dorms for the first night, which had clean, comfortable beds and an en-suite bathroom (as do all of the rooms here). The dorm was for 5 people but our group of three were the only occupants... more

I stayed in this hostel for over two weeks while making a life transition. It is beautifully managed and by far the cleanest hostel in which I've ever stayed. Fresh linens are provided every other day, the dorm rooms have only four beds and ensuite bathrooms, daily maid service is provided (and they really do scrub the bathrooms!), free Wi-Fi... more
