Very homey feeling in a turn of the century environment, at the best area of San Fransisco. Friendly service and wonderful, luscious homemade breakfast with fresh fruit, baked goods and great coffee! Rooms are cozy, clean and romantic. Recommended!

I stayed at the Monte Cristo Bed and Breakfast on a recent trip to San Francisco with my girlfriend. We stayed in the Suite (Room 1). It was an amazing stay. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the antique decorations were delightful, and as silly as it sounds I now feel cheated whenever I use a toilet that doesn't have a... More

Loved staying here for change of pace (had business dinner nearby) and will come back. Monte Cristo made me slow down - what a gift! I enjoyed the nice touches that became visible once I slowed down to take them in, from period furniture and silverware to the many thoughtful details that you wouldn't find in the large business hotels... I spent five nights at the Monte Cristo during my first visit to San Francisco. It was a lovely place to stay. My room was smallish, but charming and spotless, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the bathroom is newly renovated. Breakfast, as everyone says, was delicious and custom made, and there are always cookies and coffee in the dining... More

I am writing this review since there are extra touches that are just not listed on a form but add to the ambiance. The lady who laid out the amazing breakfast and cooked the eggs and quiche took care to dress in period clothes from earlier eras and had great stories to share. Great as a tourist resource too. The... More

We were driving down the west coast of California booking accommodation as we went, not realising how busy SF was on the weekend we were there, Monte Cristo was one of the last places with rooms (and only one at that!) on Trip Advisor. What a fantastic find, the room was beautiful (we had the twin) fitted out with gorgeous... More

My husband and I have stayed at the Monte Cristo on numerous occasions. It is conveniently located (especially in relation to our kids apartment) so we always look forward to a WONDERFUL place to call home while visiting. The beds are so comfortable, it's very quiet and breakfast is outstanding! The owners are great as well as anyone we've ever... More

Finding a good place to stay close enough into a city is sometimes hard, but I'm so glad we found Monte Cristo. The outside is nice but no indication of what's within! Monte Cristo has some history, being built originally as a bordello, and having once been a speakeasy. Now it's a bed and breakfast with a great atmosphere. We... More

My husband had business in San Francisco for 3 days and I decided to tag along. We booked the Monte Cristo B&B mainly so I could walk or ride to the parks and geocaching without having to rent a car in the city. The bus stop is right outside the door and I was able to get around on foot... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
If the walls of the Monte Cristo could talk, what stories they could tell, for this remarkable building has been a part of San Francisco since 1875. When the great fire swept the city after the 1906 earthquake, homes were put to the torch on Van Ness Avenue to create a firebreak, and the 'Saloon' not only survived, it served as a refuge for the newly post-quake homeless. This European-style B&B is convenient to the entire city and is at the junction of three great neighborhoods, Presidio Heights, Pacific Heights, and Laurel Heights. It is in one of the cleanest neighborhoods in San Francisco with abundant street parking. It is only two blocks to the elegantly restored Victorian shops, Zagat-rated restaurants and antique stores on Sacramento Street. It's within walking distance to shopping on Union Street and Fillmore Street. ... more   less
