My room was in the basement. The advantage there is no bunk beds. Yay, I hate bunks. The disadvantage is the windows are right next to a popular walking path. The windows opened down, the shades pulled down, so you couldn't have the windows open for fresh air and also have the shades closed for privacy. They need to work... More

This was my first time staying in a Hostel so I booked a private room. I usually stay in 3+ star hotels so I wasn't expecting much for ammenities. I went there b/c I was told it's a great way to meet people to see the sights with. Well, maybe if you are in your twenties it is. There was... More

My boyfriend and I stayed in a private room. The shared amenities were always kept clean, there was free wifi in our room and there was complimentary breakfast. Above all we stayed here because of its location. The hostel is right on the head of the bay. walk out the back and you will have amazing views of the golden... More

The location is fabulous, and they offer wonderful activities, but the rooms are overcrowded, the beds uncomfortable, and the noise level high. The staff's attitude is pretty much that they are doing you a favor by letting you stay there rather than that they are eager to be friendly to people who are paying quite a bit (as hostels go)... Stayed 4 nights while visiting SF for the first time, free parking was a key attraction. Note this hostel is about a half an hour walk from the centre of SF downtown. I didn't find it too much of an issue but others did. The dorm room was the largest I've stayed in but worked ok (there is always the... More

Sadly, this was one of the worst hostels I've stayed in. Maybe it just wasn't "me", though the friends I stayed with agreed they didn't particularly like it either. It's very run down. The laundry is only open for a few hours a day, which means everyone wants to use them at those times. The pool table is nice to... More

We've stayed at the Marin Hostel in the past, but wanted to try a different one in the SF area. This one is exceptional! It is right on the trail along the bay, to the left is the Marina and GG Bridge, and to the right is the Bay Bridge and Alcatraz. Good place to walk/bike. The hostel itself is... More

Wonderful place to stay, if not for cost definitely for the view, awesome complimentary breakfast & wonderful & pleasant staff. If any downfall is if staying on bottom floor there's a lack of sound proofing

If you want to experience the outdoor portion of san francisco versus the city this is the place to stay. Of course its not that far of a walk to get to fisherman's wharf. Imagine waking up and stepping out the back door with the golden gate bridge as your backyard. This is located in fort mason park a converted... More

It's not easy to find a large hostel that still manages to provide comfortable, safe, friendly accommodations at a reasonable value and that is indeed the type of service HI Fort Mason provides. Yes you can pick apart little things that might only be specific to your room (limited outlets) or complain about the lack of a massive breakfast (really!?)... More
