One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in, and the only one I returned to! :) Yes, it has every little nuisance that hostels usually have, but the atmosphere is excellent, the staff is super friendly and they even have fruits at breakfast! Great, great location too!

Yes the area seems dodgy with some strips clubs and bars but I still felt safe and during the day it's a great location to go for a walk lots of book shops and restaurants near by. The staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast and dinners are great! The ballroom is a fantastic place to meet people. The internet... More

Amazing experience at the Green Tortoise, enhanced by the staff and the other backpackers here! Free meals on Wednesday and Friday, and other evening activities organised by the hostel, although if you choose not to partake in these you still don;t miss out! We met some amazing and friendly people here, and the ballroom, the huge room where people socialise... More

I cannot speak highly enough of this hostel. I was meant to stay for two nights, however plans changed and I only stayed one night. I caught an overnight bus from LA, meaning I arrived into San Francisco at around 7am. I walked into the hostel and was greeted warmly, and the staff member who checked me in was very... More

Very nice place to stay in SF! Breakfast super good, including fresh fruits and eggs. Free dinners very healthy and homemade, thanks to an italian Chef! Rooms are clean and spacious if you choose a shared bedroom, you've got your light next to your bed and plugins. There is a sink inside the room and some draws to keep your... More

We stayed at the Green Tortoise in May 2013, during our 10-day trip in SF. The location couldn't be better, you're at walking distance from pretty much anything you wanna see or you have really good communications for e.g. Golden Gate and such. The hostel has really good offers for Alcatraz, Golden Gate, Sausalito, Red Wood and so on. The... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
