I stayed in the PTW for a few days in October and already returned in November for a couple more :D This hostel has a very special atmosphere. Only after a few days it felt like home for me, because everyone has been so open welcoming. Especially the staff is doing a great job, they really take care of the... More

Staff and energy there was out of this world. Place was designed perfectly for interaction and all of it was genuine. I've been to hundreds of hostels all around the world and this is the best one, by a long shot. Close to North Beach too! OMG, so glad that I didn't stay at a hostel in the Tenderloin. Ewww.

Pacific Tradewinds Hostel has been my choice for accommodation during my last three trips to San Francisco - pros:clean, near downtown, quiet bedrooms on floor below the reception, friendly and helpful staff - cons: small kitchen and no elevator

The best part of this hostel and the reason I chose to stay there is the location. The area is nice, walking distance from subway etc but most importantly it was a safe neighbourhood and I felt safe walking there even after dark. Can't say the same about Tenderloin where most hostels are located. The hostel is a bit scruffy... More

Absolutely amazing hostel! The staff are SO knowledgable, they have so many recommendations that make your time in SF unforgettable. The hostel is perfectly located and is the perfect place to make great friends with like minded people. I would recommend PTW to anyone visiting SF, you will have a tough time leaving!

The good: Amazing location in between the financial district and China town. Fantastic staff who were a whole lot of fun to hang out with. Also compared with the other hostel I stayed at in SF (no name dropping) it was substantially cheaper while being just as good I think. The not so good: I was in the downstairs dorm... More

A travellers haven! Like a home away from home! Very comfortable and a great atmosphere. By far the most social hostel I've stayed in whilst in the USA. Yet they have the perfect balance between making everyone feel involved and ensuring there is minimum disturbance to guests who need their rest.

I booked at Pacific Tradewinds for 2 nights and ended up staying for a week. While the lack of a ceiling on the hostel dorm room, or the light streaming in through the large curtainless window at the end of the hall could turn you off, it still remains one of the best hostels I have stayed at. Courtney and... More

I'm really in two minds about Pacific Tradewinds. On one hand I loved the social and inclusive vibe, however on the other I hated how the lodging side of things. Each floor has about 10-15 dorm rooms, each open to the other accessed by the central corridor. This means that if you're not a sound sleeper you'll be able to... More

The hostel is quite small and so you will inevitably meet your fellow travellers. The rooms on each floor do not have doors but you need a key to get onto each floor and there are only a couple of rooms but may be an issue for those with privacy issues. The hostel has many activities and encourages everyone to... More

Staying in Financial District

Neighborhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
