Circa 1870 is a little gem. You would never know abut it from the outside, but the owners have 5 well appointed guest rooms and a communal dining/living area which is condusive to meeting other guests and chatting endlessly with Raila, your host. The hotel is located in an excellent spot within the heart of the city, Pacific Heights. Fillmore,... more

The B&B is located in a nice area of San Francisco with the fire station across the street. If you are a light sleeper, make sure you book a room at the back. It's an old house, so do expect an old washroom,i.e. old style bathroom, the strange toilet. The breakfast was nice, proper European coffee!!! more

After traveling around the states for a month we finally got to San Francisco and the Circa 1870's B&B. At first we were unsure whether we had gotten the right address, as there is no sign or anything outside telling you that you have come to the right place. But of course Raila, the owner, saw us coming and came... more

A real San Francisco Victorian era home with a friendly, generous innkeeper who clearly loves her work and her guests. Raila made us feel right at home. By the time we left, we felt like we'd been staying with family. Great location with an easy walk to several bus lines or to neighborhood restaurants. We had one room while our... more

This Bed and breakfast offers a very good location. Close to the Cable Cars, shopping, restaurants, etc. It is an Old Home with lots of charm. The only downside is that not all rooms have a Private Bath. more

Myself and my friend booked a twin room to share in Circa 1870 in September 2006 and stayed five nights. We emailed the hostess Raila directly and agreed a rate of €115 per room per night which would include taxes if we paid cash. We were told this didn’t include breakfast although on arrival we were offered tea/coffee/toast each morning... more

We had a good time there with our wacky hostess, who was very much in everybody's business. However, she did tack on a 15% tax onto the room charge that I didn't notice until later, which I believe should have been about 8%. (Isn't that the standard California room tax?). Her bookkeeping is substandard, and thus invites this kind of... more

The hotel tax in San Francisco is 14%, not 8%. (I assume you just rounded up for the 15% figure) To verify this anyone can search "Hotel Tax San Francisco" in their favorite search engine.

Stayed here with my friends for the weekend and we all liked it a lot. We arrived very late and the inkeeper Raila was waiting us with a bottle of wine. That was a really nice surprise after a long drive from L.A. Location is good. We arrived by car and had little difficulties with parking but after 10 minutes... more

We have stayed at Circa 1870 four times in the past three years and enjoyed each stay. We have stayed in three different rooms - all comfortable and nicely decorated. The hostess, Raila, is friendly, accommodating, and very helpful. We enjoyed the guests that we have met there, the wine in the evening, the prepared-to-order breakfasts, the ambiance, the neighborhood,... more

Review of Circa 1870 Bed & Breakfast Beware the “quiet” rooms overlooking the garden, which are indeed quiet until 7am when you’ll wake up to the sounds of circular saws and hammers. When requesting a “quiet” room, innkeeper Raila Alder will of course neglect to mention this minor detail. The rooms facing the front of the house overlook California St.,... more
