Fabulous hotel. Hotel has been recently remodeled. The staff is wonderful. Hotel is in a great location. Would definitely stay there again. However, I would not use their contracted shuttle service to the airport.

I really enjoyed staying at hotel Mark Twain. It's within walking distance to Union Square, shops and restaurants. Being fod of literature, the theme is interesting and the hotel is nicely decorated with everything related to Mark Twain.

First off, be prepared to deal with walking in a less than desireable part of a beautiful city. BART is close by, along with buses, etc on Market street, which is super helpful. As for this hotel, the night staff was less than courteous and welcoming - I got shot down when I asked if they had a military discount... More

Dear Tony G; Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. Every metropolitan city does have pockets of areas that might have pan handlers and the like. But if our guests tend to go left – and perhaps walk a path that is has lots of tourists and visitors like in front of the Hilton (which is across... More

Definitely by far the worst stay in California ! All future travelers please avoid this hotel. They give family rooms ( rooms with adjoining doors) to single travellers ! This means you hear everything through the paper thin walls and if you complain - ofcourse they have no rooms ! Unless you are willing to upgrade for a room which... More

Great location with lots of good, reasonably-priced restaurants within a three-block radius. Plus less than five minutes to Union Square; four or so blocks uphill to Nob Hill (and from there a short walk to Chinatown and North Beach); a ten-minute walk to SoMa, etc. My wife and I were very impressed with the renovations to update the hotel to... Lovely hotel with a lovely staff. The rooms are large, the beds are very comfortable, the shower pressure is perfect! Good location, too. The only downsides were that we could hear the conversation from the next guest room. Lucky for us they only talked during the day so it wasn't a problem. Second downside was that the breakfast was not... More

when we arrived at the hotel we were told "oh we are dong renovations in the lobby so the lift is out of order so you will have to walk up 2 flights of stairs to get to the lift' and the stairs had all the carpet ripped off. we were on the 5th floor. my husband and i find... More

Dear Glenda M, We're sorry if the end of our renovations caused problems with you using the stairs. They weren't out of service for the entire day - but still we see how you were inconvenienced. Older boutique hotels often do have smaller bathrooms - we bathrooms of various sizes and it seems you might have been in a small... More

Great staff, updated lobby and rooms and an amazing little secret garden all near Union Square and at a very affordabel price. I have stayed at the Mark Twain three times now when I visit San Francisco and each time I am very pleased. I get treated very well, they remember my name. The rooms are generous and I like... More

I'm sad as it was my first time at this hotel. When you enter the hotel, and your room, you know that it's an old hotel, but they invested in renovations, except for one thing: walls are made of paper. During all my stay, I was able to hear everything from other rooms and worst, from outside (even with ear... More

Dear fredericharper We are sincerely sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. I know we tried to make good while you were in the hotel - but we can't make a second first impression. We do value your opinion in any event. We are working on ideas about the walls. Take care, Morgan Ellsworth Manager, Hotel Mark Twain More

I was initially hesitant about our stay here based on reviews but we had a great two nights! Rooms are very spacious, newly decorated, very clean and tastefully decorated with enough of a Mark Twain touch. Service was excellent and efficient. The location is great with an easy walk (no hills!) to Union square and the cable cars. Would definitely... More
