I was curious as to what we were in for after reading a few of the reviews on this page, but I have to say that I found this hotel charming, comfortable, and pleasant. The front desk staff were helpful and kind, the room was a good size (with a nice washroom that had obviously been upgraded recently), and the... More

I put off writing this review because we have stayed in supposedly haunted hotels and never really experienced anything. We have discussed the things that happened in our room and tried to chalk it up to an old building. It is an old building by American standards. I would leave it at that if it had just been flickering lights... More

This may be our new "go to" hotel for San Francisco. It is a charming, old style hotel (which I love) - but very clean and comfortable. It is literally around the corner from Union Square and a few minutes walk to the waterfront. Our room was quiet and the ceiling fan provided all the air that we needed to... More

Visiting Sf this hotel is close to perfect. Why? Location! Old rooms, distanced staff, no breakfast, but still worth it :-) Affordable and clean, no air-condition and expensive parking, still worth it :-) Close to shopping and cable cars :-) No problems to get around to all highlights in Sf :-)

Great location, friendly and helpful staff. We spent a couple of nights in this little hotel on Union Square. We had an 8th floor suite which was clean, comfortable and inviting. Will stay here again.

This hotel has definitely seen better days. Although obviously renovated and clean it is most likely one of the original hotels of San Francisco. The ground floor area is quite impressive with many comfortable lounge chairs, an open fireplace (when needed) and boardroom table. Quite impressive. Accommodation in Central San Francisco is expensive hence our reason for staying here...it is... More

We recently stayed here for two nights. I will begin by saying that our room was at least clean and the bed comfortable and that the location was convenient. Unfortunately that is where the good experience ends. Those claiming this as a boutique hotel clearly have not had the pleasure of staying in such a place. I was very disappointed.... More

We stayed here for 3 days at the end of May. The room was an decent size as we were only there for 3 days. The room was clean and tidy but the rooms could do with a refurb. The hotel is central to a lot of shops, bars and restaurants. The staff are friendly and helpful especially Kevin.

There is plenty to like about this old hotel, ideally located in the center of San Francisco. The more churlish of travellers might note that the decor is dated and it needs repainting. But my small and spotlessly clean room had everything I needed including a comfortable double bed, bijou bathroom (with good toiletries) and a large walk in closet.... More

Hotel Cartwright dates from 1913 and has had five recent owners. It has 114 rooms. There is only one small elevator. The first floor bar has no liquor license. The place is a block from Union Square and in the heart of San Francisco. The place is dated, a bit musty, but it was priced less than $200 which is... More
