This was the first time my wife and I have been to San Francisco. We were unsure of best places or areas to stay. This hotel ended up being perfect. It is an older hotel, but it was very clean. The staff was incredibly nice. The library bar had a fun atmosphere. They give you a free glass of wine... More

The "Excellent" rating is based on the fact that you get exactly what see on the Rex's web site and guest reviews. This is an old, small boutique hotel. So, if you're expecting modern, contemporary, luxury, you won't get it here. But, you will get a charming, unique boutique hotel experience with a very clean and comfortable room with some nice... My husband and I stayed at Hotel Rex for two nights. It is in a good location, our room was large, the bed comfortable and the staff pleasant. The bathroom was dated, but functional. My only gripe, and it is pretty minor, was that the toilet flush was really loud - it sounded industrial!!

We visited San Fran for a long weekend and loved this hotel. It is convenient to everything. Also, the staff was a huge help. They provided us with restaurants, transportation when needed and a friendly pup. The bed was comfy and rooms were very nice.

If you're visiting Baghdad on the Bay, you might as well eschew those cookie cutter Marriotts and Hiltons opting for a charming, boutique experience. Built in 1907, with tilting floors and a miniscule elevator to prove it, the 7 story Rex is a funky, literary themed oasis in the heart of San Francisco's shopping mecca. My wife and I have... More

Nice boutique hotel. Our room was not very large, but OK. From Monday till Friday the Library bar serves breakfast, except on holidays like Thanksgiving Day. But we had a good breakfast in a diner at the corner of the street. This is a great advantage of Hotel Rex: it is located on walking distance from the restaurants and shops.... More

The hotel is located in a historic building, built at the turn of the century, but has been updated with a very cool funky (yuppy?) vibe. The room was very spacious by SF standards; very well appointed; comfortable bed; the bathrooms was large; not marble/granite like the newer luxury hotels, but still quite nice. Located near Union Square; next to... More

A block from Union Square, close to public transportation and plenty of restaurants and bars nearby make the location of the Rex exceptional. The room was small but adequate, very clean and at the back of the hotel which was a quieter location. Nice plush towels in the bathroom. The bar offers a free wine hour, but they even extended... Really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Rex. It is a small boutique hotel with a really fun bar/lounge downstairs, excellent service, and well appointed rooms. The location was excellent, just outside of Union Square and not too far up the hill. There are lots of bars/restaurants within walking distance. My only complaint was that the window AC was very noisy.... More

This really feels more like a european hotel. The staff was very helpful and warm, the lobby and bar area were lovely, and the focus of the room was on quality rather than flashiness. The location is very convenient for shopping on Union Square. The front desk recommended a very close restaurant, Cesario's, which served excellent italian food. We can't... More
