My wife and I needed a room in San Francisco for 2 nights but were surprised at the high prices so looked for a cheaper alternative and found the Rex. It is an OK hotel in a good situation for getting around SF. It is an old hotel which has been given a makeover but it is still very dated... More

This place is in serious need of renovation. It's very clean but extremely dated and it snows. Carpets are so old that no amount of clearing can hide it. Everything in the room was voefully outdated and our phones couldn't get network connection half the time. There weren't any recepticles where you can conviniently plugging anything without first unplugging a... More

It is in heart of SFO. You can walk to Union square, second largest Macy's, China town, great shopping place. Macy's has a Cheese cake factory but it was so crowded that I didnt want to wait for 45 mins. But am sure it would have been a good experience. I had only a weekend in SFO and am glad... More

Was very pleasantly surprised in finding an affordable, comfortable and well located hotel in downtown San Francisco. The service was excellent, the evening drink in the library a pleasant addition and the free bicycles a surprise. The rooms are older style and smaller, but well appointed.

PROS: -This is a fantastic location near Union Square with easy walking distance to the Ferry Building, Financial District, SOMA, and Civic Center. -The lobby and rooms are comfortably decorated and noise was not an issue. -Front Desk will store luggage and most of the clerks are very friendly CONS: -Valet takes at least 30 minutes -No pour it yourself... Okay so this is my third review of the Rex since 2011, but we're regular annual visitors to the City and this place really deserves the recognition. First, we got a great deal through AAA when most other places in Union Square weren't offering anything special (Spring break?). As others have said, none of the large hotels can begin to... More

I was all set to be disappointed in this classic hotel (1906), but left thoroughly delighted. Complementary wine at happy hour. No free breakfast, but the in-house restaurant was very good. Service was first rate all over Hotel Rex, and particularly at the front desk. We had an initial problem with A/C that did not work -- but were moved... More

Stayed at the Hotel Rex with my teenage son for a quick spring break trip to San Francisco. This was my first stay at a Joie de Vivre property. Experience was positive overall. Pros: Convenient location, friendly staff, quirky vibe, Library bar with jazz trio on Friday night! Cons: If you like your big business chain hotels with full amenities,... More

The staff at friendly, courteous and helpful. Our room was small but quaint. Beds were very comfortable. Location was fantastic and near Union Square. The Library Bar in... More

My stay in SFO was for business and I generally find myself staying in the larger, chain hotels...but for a number of reasons I ended up at the Hotel Rex and I was please with my stay. The location of the hotel is convenient to shopping and restaurants (although I wasn't wowed with any of the restaurants located adjacent to... More
