Stayed in the plantation village. Dorm was really, really grubby. I was really surprised to find out they had a cleaner as im not sure what she does!!! Good position for the North Shore and this place is predominantly a surfers hangout. There are various signs around saying about keeping it clean (what a joke!) and a strict quiet policy... More

We booked by phone. The contact was friendly and helpful. A Backpackers van picked us up at our hotel in Waikiki. After a couple other stops an hour later we were at the rented Studio room. Though we had been warned that the rooms were not fancy, we were a bit disappointed considering the price. On the positive side, the... More

We got to Backpackers after dark and found a very laid-back, friendly staff after some difficulty locating the office. (The hostel is on two separate properties about 50 yards apart, and the property is not well-marked.) We stayed two nights in Cabin 1 in Plantation Village, which had four bedrooms with a queen in each, a shared bathroom, kitchen, and... More

We stayed for two days at the Beach Building. This is definitely more for surfers than for family groups. The beds were clean and the location is absolutely fabulous. Cooking in the kitchenette was not an option for us since everything seemed so worn out and questionable. For example, there were D-con and roach traps under the sink. Thankfully, we... More

Stayed in 6 bed dorm-style cabin. Yes, place is a little run down, showers are old and I wouldn't recommend using the cookware, but such a good way to meet people from around the world. First night had a beach bonfire with people from Brazil, Australia, South Africa and beyond. Always activities and people to meet. Not to mention location... More

OK so we stayed in the Brown house private room for 3 nights...first impressions were not good. I know you expect a bit of grime in a backpackers but this was dirty and expensive. the staff were a bit aggressive really but they gave us no real problems. This is the only accommodation in the north shore unless you go... More

The Absolute Worst Lodging I have ever experienced. I stay at 0* to 5* places. Attempting to rate each place base of value received for price paid. Answering the question, would I go back again for around the same price?' Folks, I have been many places on the planet (look me up on TripAdvisor Map, can't get it? email me!).... More

I could not help but respond to the comments others left that blew the place out. My sister and I stayed in the front of cabin 4, shaded by a plumeria tree. The flowers smelled like coconut. I brought my own pillow and light blanket as I tend to do on all trips, but would have gladly used theirs. Ryan,... More

This was definitely the worst of the five places that we stayed in Hawaii. The shared bathroom was disgusting (we needed to clean it before using it) and the whole place was dark and not well kept. It was also expensive! $70 a night when we were only paying $55 in Waikiki, Honolulu where we had our own kitchenette and... More

It's dirty, unsafe, simply a scam! We stayed at the plantation village in a privat cottage for $80/night. Besides it's bad condition and dirtyness we got all our stuff stolen in front of the so-called staff! And guess what, they didn't care or offered any help whatsoever...! Stay away from that place!
