We were intrigued by these cottages, having driven by them many times, and decided to give them a try. Despite the charming setting and lovely grounds, the Waimea Plantation Cottages did not live up to our expectations. First, be aware that the units are not ADA accessible and most, if not all, have stairs. Our cottage was generally clean, but there was a terrible stain on the floor of the shower. The sofa and chair were so uncomfortable as to be unusable. The cottage was well supplied, but daily housekeeping services are not provided. Restaurant choices in the area are extremely limited. Having satisfied our curiosity, we will not be returning.

Property's Favorite Review
I wasn't sure what to expect from this trip since we have never been to this side of the island. It was however so lowkey and laid back that if we ever go back to Kauai this is were we will stay for sure! Like a lot of the reviews state air conditioning is only in the main bedrooms of the cottages. We got smart after the first night and closed off the main door to the living room from the bedrooms and left the AC on during the day to help keep it cool between the two bedrooms. There are a ton of windows and patio doors to help combat the living room/kitchen areas from getting too overheated, but it still gets hot during the day. If I only had one complaint it was that our AC in our room was old and didn't get as cold as the other rooms and it ran loudly. The cottage was clean and even though it is "old" it is well maintained and had updated bathrooms and WIFI. The nostalgia of the cottages is overwhelmingly sentimental which was exactly what we were looking for on this trip. True to some other people's complaints about roosters crowing at early times of the morning, the front desk offers ear plugs to those who need them, but it beats the overall hustle and bustle noise of the bigger island tourist traveling noises. Amenities include an on sight restaurant "Chicken in a Barrel" and "Da Pizza Place" which were both good. If you aren't in the mood for a restaurant meal the outside BBQs and kitchen in the cottages provide a great place to make your own meals. The grounds are well maintained by a group of hard working people, which didn't go unnoticed. The grounds are covered with lush vegetation and some edible fruits, which were tasty. The grounds people were friendly, even telling us what each tree/flowering bush was what. A very nice worker, Josh, picked a fresh pomelo for us and star fruit from the nearby trees. We even got fresh coconuts from other workers cutting down coconuts to eat and drink. Thank you. There are no beach bodies lounging around on this beach, as this side of the island has rougher waters. You won't see swimmers or roaming tourists a whole lot while visiting the beach, but the black sands are incredible and make for a wonderful morning or late night walk. If you are yearning for a dip there is a pool on the grounds that is 3-4 feet deep, so kid friendly. There is a shuffle board and a volleyball set up close by that entertained the entire family. I couldn't find anything bad to say about this stay! Friendly staff, privacy, beautiful ocean front views, fantastical accommodations, and just a beach walk to town. Thank you all for a wonderful stay!!

Charming collection of old cottages on site fronting a quiet beach. The cottages are all slightly different, but well equipped, comfortable and clean. It is charming and understated. There are beautiful sunsets and the grounds are lovely to walk in. The property does have an independently run restaurant and bar on site. Close to the Waimea Canyon, so you can get a morning head start on other visitors.

We absolutely loved the cottages- each time we came home after an adventure, we breathed a sigh of relief as we pulled into this peaceful place! And luckily, we saved a few free days to just hang out and absorb the beauty of this property, too. We understood ahead of time that there's a great walking beach here but no ocean swimming, which was fine for our needs, and that the cottages are historic, meaning not sparkling new & modern. We found our cottage to be clean and comfortable, and LOVED the ocean front views. Ocean Front and & Ocean View cottages are recommended, but if you're further back, you can still sit by the beach in the many comfortable chairs and hammocks. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and having a restaurant on property for breakfast, lunch and dinner was super convenient. The town of Waimea is definitely off the beaten path and the only true destinations here are Waimea Canyon and these cottages. You'll probably travel west to Polihale Beach and east and north for most other things, and traffic can be harsh with one main road around the island. But if you love historic hotels like we do, if you love peace and quiet and perhaps more of a true Hawaiin living experience, you'll love Waimea Plantation Cottages! If you're looking for Four Seasons luxury, it isn't for you!

The cottages seem to be fairly old and modest in character -- bathroom and kitchen haven't been updated recently -- but mine was nevertheless very enjoyable to stay in -- cozy, comfortable bed and chairs, clean and well furnished, with a lovely lanai -- in my case, with a view of the ocean and black sand beach (about 200 yards away), palm trees, other cottages and large lawn. Good ventilation, and the minisplit a/c worked well. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good restaurant/bar -- Chicken in a Barrel -- is on the premises, and a good grocery store less than half a mile away. Very peaceful --Blessedly, there was no rooster (or other) noise, unlike the more luxurious condo I had rented in Princeville.

I thought this place was perfect and exactly matched my expectations from the website. One of the other reviews complained about heat in the winter and one blanket…that’s true there’s no heat, but there’s another blanket in the closet and the lovely staff will bring you whatever you need so get as many blankets as you want. I thought the rustic nature of the cabins was perfect: not so rustic that it was weird or gross. But rustic enough that it felt a little more adventurous. The town is walking distance away with anything you need too. We appreciated having a restaurant on site just to keep things simple most nights. It’s good—not amazing, but good and reliable. The only complaint I have is not against the hotel: the beach is so beautiful and serene. But the water is definitely brown. There’s a nice clear beach about a mile away but just know you’re not going to want to swim in the water here. I’d definitely stay here again!

If you’re looking for remote, and the bare necessities, this is your place. Most of the staff is standoffish or rude. If the temperature falls below 75° the cottages have no heat we stayed for six days one of those was rainy all day with a high of 61°, we froze in our cabin. One Blanket on the bed and no heaters. You will be much better off, staying at a resort in Lihue.

Aloha, David. We are sorry that your vacation did not measure up to your expectations. We take guest experience seriously and will take your comments into account. We also apologize that you didn't know that the air conditioning units in the cottage are also heaters. We don't seem to have any record of you contacting the front desk, but they certainly would have had housekeeping bring you extra blankets. A hui hou.

Actually went over a decade ago for a Christmas Family reunion. Took up 6 or 7 cottages. Nice grounds to chase the chickens around. The staff helped us set up a table for 15 while we distributed cooking the meal to different cabins. Very quite. The bar has gone through several changes since we were there but it was still nice for a beer or two. The best port chops I've ever had in my life were there. I don't think that meal is available any longer though. You can take day trips to the Canyon and the north shore. Nice beach for walking, not so good for swimming. There is a pool that was nice. Great place to sit and talk to family.

Had two nights here and enjoyed every minute. The historic cottages have absolutely everything you will need and are very comfortable. With the oceanfront views it couldn’t be more beautiful. A couple were getting married there and it must be an idilic spot. It’s also away from the heavy tourist trade so lovely and quiet too.

We absolutely loved this place. We stayed in two different cottages because we booked a bit late. Our first cottage was a one bedroom with a partial ocean view, and our second one was a two bedroom oceanfront cottage. These are historic plantation cottages, so you may not have granite countertops and expensive light fixtures, but it makes up tenfold in charm. What you will have is amazing views, peaceful green garden surroundings, cooling breezes and the sound of waves to go to sleep to at night! We didn’t use the air conditioning and loved the fresh air and breezes. There are also a few friendly cats, which we loved. All the cottages have at least a small balcony, like our 1 bedroom partial ocean view, but the oceanfront one had a wraparound porch, which was wonderful. My only complaint would be that we only had a small two seat table outside while some of the other same size cottages had larger tables or more seating options on the porch. Also, our loungers disappeared a few days into our stay, after they had mowed. So I’m not sure where those went, but that left us with only the table seating. Also, the price tag is high, but it seems all of Kaua’i is that way. We did a lot of hiking in the Waimea canyon area, and this is very convenient for it!
