As I started planning the second leg of my vacation (first leg was Japan), a review of the Kalalau B&B in the New York Times caught my eye. I decided to give it a go, especially after I realized its location (Hanalei, in north Kauai) was what I was looking for. But the experience started very badly. As I was booking by e-mail, I had a very rough e-mail exchange with the owner. The reason was that he sent me a pretty cryptical e-mail with lots of acronyms, which had to do with various taxes and fees that I eventually realized are commonplace in Hawaii. Americans sometimes do not realize that the rest of the world does not use acronyms as much as they do, and the owner could have been more careful and write an e-mail the rest of us could understand.
