After 5 campgrounds, 2 nights in a wilderness cabin, 1 hotel and 1 friends house, and around 40 miles of hiking in 10 days, this place looked too good to be true. Oh, but it was so, so true. We had the sanctuary, complete with outdoor zen shower and Japanese soaking tub, a pair of robes and slippers, and a... More

We went hiking in the Volcanoes National Park in December for our 25th anniversary of wedding. We ran Honolulu marathon and 10K respectivelly so we needed a good week of rest. The retreat was perfect for us. 5 minutes from the Park entrance, from the restaurants in the village, far from the main road, in a very nice remote place,... More

My husband and I spent three nights in the Bamboo Guest House at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat, just a few minutes drive to the Volcano National Park. Our experience could not have been better. We did not see any of the other three units or their occupants, because each is secluded and surrounded by tropical vegetation. The unit is large,... More

We loved meeting Peter and hearing the story of how he designed and built the Rainforest Retreat. He was very welcoming, showing us all around and explaining all the detail we needed to know. The Guest Cottage had everything you could need for a few nights stay - you can tell Peter and Kathleen take great pride in their property... More

My family of 3 stayed in the Bamboo Guest Cottage and could not have been more comfortable. The cottage is lovely for a family, but is probably meant to be more of a romantic retreat. The outdoor Japanese tub with a glass of wine after hiking the craters was superb. Our host buys coffee (delicious!), fruit, jams etc from local... More

Yowser! This was hands-down the best place we stayed in Hawai’i. The cottage was AMAZING! It was beautifully decorated, very clean, and so, so comfortable. Bathroom was awesome, and with a shower easily big enough for two. The kitchen had everything we needed. Tea, coffee, and breakfast food was provided (a great selection too – eggs, fruit, bagels, pastries, granola,... More

The Volcano Rainforest Retreat has been our highlight throughout 17 days on Maui and Big Island. Compared with our other accommodations this one is outstanding and has been one of the cheaper once. The Volcano area is fascinating and you can easily spend a few days there. After a day exploring the countryside you can't wait to get back and... More

My husband and I stayed here for two nights of our honeymoon, I have never been at a more romantic place before. We stayed in the forest house and would definitely stay there again. We had a shared jacuzzi tub with one of the other houses but the owners emphasize maintaining privacy. If another couple is using the jacuzzi you... More

Like other reviewers, I have stayed at (and enjoyed the beauty of) the Bamboo Cottage. But perhaps unlike other reviewers, I've returned to stay there several times in the past decade. Also, I tend to stay longer than just a night or two. Why? Read the other reviews to find out why VRR is such a lovely spot. Then think... More

Volcano Rainforest Retreat is in a great location (5 min drive from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park). We stayed in the Sanctuary room. Be aware that there is no indoor shower but this didn't bother us, even on the cooler nights. With the sanctuary room you have access to your own private hot tub which is so relaxing. Room was very... More
