We stayed in The Sanctuary and the Forest House and both were cozy and reclusive. The Sanctuary's outdoor shower and Japanese bath was just the right amount of old time charm and comfortable romance. As well the extra comforts of the Forest House were soothing after a long day hiking the volcano. One tip I would give is bring ear... More

To the "wood nymph" lol... We are so glad to hear that your stay here with us was spectacular and a wonderful experience. We can understand the noise of the raindrops on the roof, and wish we could change that part for you. However, that is what makes Volcano a beautiful place, RAINFOREST! And the rain does provide all the... More

If I could give 7 stars, I would. This place is the most romantic place ever. We stayed in the Sanctuary. Private ofuro and outdoor shower - enchanting. Sleeping surrounded by windows to the rainforest - magical. Fresh papaya every morning - delightful! My husband and I believe the best things come in small packages, and we pack light. Word... More

Many others have said it so well; this property is magical and the Sanctuary is a perfectly designed retreat within the retreat. The various cottages are scattered around the property and virtually invisible from each other, so privacy is not an issue. We enjoyed leaving all the blinds up so we could appreciate being in the middle of the rain... More

We so enjoyed our cottage in the rainforest with beautiful plants, foliage and blooms. Peter and Kathleen were so welcoming, with suggestions about restaurants, hikes etc. We loved being so close to the Volcanos National Park - especially our evening trips in to see Kilauea! The only drawback to the cottage was not having a sink in the bathroom area... More

Had a wonderful time here, the grounds were truly in the Rainforest. Impecably kept I might add as well. Enjoyed the hot tub during the cool evening. We stayed in the Forest house, a bit smallish but it worked well for these two campers. In theory you could walk to the village of Volcano, but that weather thing...

This truly is a retreat, with three free standing units nestled with complete privacy amidst a fern forest. These are beautifully constructed with natural woods and thoughtful designs. As opposed to the traditional bread and breakfast model of shared morning meals, breakfast is delivered to your room by pre-order, allowing the retreat atmosphere to be maintained. The hot tub, also... More

This was as close to perfect as a place could be. We stayed at the Sanctuary Cottage and it was as if it was part of the forest. The furo tub was wonderful and totally private. We wished we'd stayed another night and I agree with the owners that a 2-3 day minimum is necessary to really absorb the good... More

After 5 campgrounds, 2 nights in a wilderness cabin, 1 hotel and 1 friends house, and around 40 miles of hiking in 10 days, this place looked too good to be true. Oh, but it was so, so true. We had the sanctuary, complete with outdoor zen shower and Japanese soaking tub, a pair of robes and slippers, and a... More

We went hiking in the Volcanoes National Park in December for our 25th anniversary of wedding. We ran Honolulu marathon and 10K respectivelly so we needed a good week of rest. The retreat was perfect for us. 5 minutes from the Park entrance, from the restaurants in the village, far from the main road, in a very nice remote place,... More

My husband and I spent three nights in the Bamboo Guest House at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat, just a few minutes drive to the Volcano National Park. Our experience could not have been better. We did not see any of the other three units or their occupants, because each is secluded and surrounded by tropical vegetation. The unit is large,... More
