I have extensive experience with 5-star/diamond hotels including many Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons. I stayed at Mauna Kea for a week March 17-24, just before the grand re-opening. They are trying very hard, but missing the details. The room pricing suggests they have already ascended to a Four Seasons level of quality, and the rooms show this quality, however the... more

Our stay at the Mauna Kea was great. The renovated rooms are great- very comfortable. I loved the bathrooms and the ipod docks. Nice wide lanais. We were in the "mountain view" rooms but they were great. I do think that spending a little extra for an ocean view would be a good value; the view is really spectacular. There... more

The Mauna Kea seems to be reopening in stages, each one I think a step up from the last. I went by recently and got a chance to see the new Golf Pro Shop and restaurant Number 3. The old 19th Hole has been replaced with an airy, beautiful building that does the "new" golf course justice. They've also added... more

We actually stayed at the condos affiliated with the Mauna Kea. They were excellent, had all the privileges at the hotel, and still had all the amenities of home. Guests at either Mauna Kea, Hapuna (sister hotel right next door), or condos are allowed privileges at both hotels. Both have lovely pools, adjacent to beautiful white sand beaches. Plenty of... more

We stayed at the Mauna Kea shortly after New Year's; our last visit was weeks before the earthquake that closed them down for two years. For purists who loved the Mauna Kea for its unassuming ways, you will be very happy. It is mostly unchanged. We had a sublime visit and will definitely go back. For those hoping for a... more

Just got back from a week at the soft opening of the mauna kea beach resort. We were there from Dec 29 until Jan 6th. The beach is awesome and probably one of the best in the world. The hotel is not so good. Staff is friendly but since it was closed for earthquake renovations and it was a soft... more

Our family was excited to return to the Mauna Kea. It was great to see many of the staff who recognized us. The hotel has improved somewhat in appearance, yet for being closed for two years we expected much more. The last two years we vacationed at other resorts in Hawaii, and our expecations were raised due to those experiences... more

I travel ALOT and am fortunate to say that I've stayed at about 40 different resorts in Hawaii, Caribbean, Aruba (resort writer dream job). And this place is my favorite. (and is the favorite of my colleague). Sure its not as luxurious as the Ritz Kapalua - but its a quieter, more casual elegance that suits an island vibe. Golden... more

My husband and I stayed at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel for our Honeymoon and we really loved it. The rooms are spacious and clean, the staff clean your room once during the morning and turn the room down at night. The open atmosphere at the hotel was very nice. The beach was the best part of the hotel. It... more

As you already know, the Mauna Kea Resort hotel is closed for refurbishment. The hotel, which we stayed at in 1975 and again in 1997, is magnificent. From the beautiful entrance to the stunning views to the world-class dining, this has long been one of my favorite destinations. There are other sites along the Kohala coast, from the Fairmont Orchid... more
