With koa wood antiques, charming sepia family photographs, and a porch directly aimed at Hilo Bay in the distance, Shipman's is THE B and B to seek for respite. The hostess, Barbara, who is third generation Shipman is bright and engaging. Our upstairs room was quiet and charming with the only sounds: birds. An artifully displayed breakfast with fresh fruit... More

The Shipman House is an awesome building with an incredible site overlooking the gorge above Hilo. Food is abundant, innkeepers are friendly, relaxed, and knowledgeable. Too bad about the stucco-like paint job. It clashes with the fine architectural quality of the house. Also, it looks like the maintenance guy either retired or got tired a while ago! Overall, we REALLY... More

Management response:

Much of the "stucco-like paint job" that "clashes with the fine architectural quality of the house" was original to the house back in 1899. It was done by adding sand to the wet paint. That finish would not have been my first choice, either, but it's historic. More

Wonderful room, great breakfast if you like exotic local fruits, juices, homemade breads on the porch. Location is along a rainforest setting, sounds to fall asleep by. Main rooms of house are interesting, though not intended to be homey but Hawaii is about the outdoors. Excellent service, felt like part of the family - they even phoned a restaurant to... More

Every part of our stay at the Shipman house was outstanding. The Andersons couldn't have been more gracious or helpful. The house was wonderful in all aspects, from the history to the facilities to location. Breakfasts were highlights of each day. Our Shipman House experience was one of best parts of our 10 days in Hawaii.

In Hilo, one of the most beatiiful towns in all of Hawaii, there stands a time capsule. The Shipman House is like a vessel that transports you back into time and allows you a glimps of what Hawaii was like 100 years ago and it is a treasure. Painstakingly restored and tastefully decorated with all Kona wood furnture, the family... More

We stayed in the separate cottage at the Shipman House. It was lovely! It had high ceilings, comfy linens, and it was clean. The decor was simple and tasteful, with authentic Hawaiian touches. The cottage was light and airy. The main house is beautiful, and the hosts were kind and full of great stories about the history of the house... More
