For us, there is always a degree of trepidation about staying at a B&B. Are the rooms comfortable? How's the food? Are the owners gracious and accommodating? Shipman House gave us no regrets. Barbara and Gary are wonderful hosts who make you feel as if you are distant relatives in town for a visit. Each morning they provided a delightful... More

This Victorian B&B is magnificent! The rooms are furnished with period pieces, many original to the house. The surroundings are really beautiful, peaceful and quiet. Innkeepers Barbara and Gary are terrific hosts. They’ll sit down with you at breakfast and fill you in on the history of the inn, on the history of Hilo, and will give you good ideas... More

This was our first trip to Hilo and we decided staying at this beautiful house would just be the thing to do. We had a wonderful experience enjoying this late 19th century Victorian home. The hosts, Barbara and Gary, were gracious hosts, making sure our needs were met along with giving us great advice as to what to do and... More

As you step up the porte cochere, you cannot but try to imagine this beautifully kept old mansion in its time of glory, with views to the sea and green pastures which have been replaced over time by suburbs and power lines. After we rang the door bell, we were welcomed by Barbara who gave us a tour of the... More

Be certain you know the B and B experience you want. Our 4 nights were so-so, because we didn’t read the fine print (our fault). Shipman House is an antique-filled historic old house/museum, but strictly as a B and B it is expensive, with amenities and “house rules” that didn’t suit us. On arrival, our hostess’s first words “no shoes... More

This review is long overdue. We stayed at the Shipman House last April (2014) for 4 nights at the end of our two week trip. Gary and Barbara were excellent hosts, engaging and informative and always friendly. We stayed in Clara's Shell room which looked over a jungle ravine and out toward the ocean. The sound of the torrential rain... More

No trip to the Big Island is complete without visiting the eastern tropical side of the island. We wanted to visit Vulcano National Parc, Mouna Kea and Waipio Valley and decided that Hilo would be the most central place to stay. We loved Hilo, it is a funky little town and not just a tourist resort. The Shipman House is... More

We chose this B and B based on the reviews we read on Trip Advisor, and we were so glad that we did. We stayed at Shipman House for three nights. This beautiful home was immaculate, the breakfast was a bounty of fresh fruits, cereal, muffins, breads, homemade jam, and many other things. Gary and Barbara were very friendly and... More

We have stayed in quite a few B&B's and never had as delightful an experience as we did here. We stayed four nights and not only didn't want to leave, we're ready to go back! The hosts, Barbara and Gary, are exceptional. They share their knowledge of all things Hawaiian and help you find the most popular places, but especially... More

The Shipman house is a stately home on beautiful grounds located only a couple of minutes from the center of Hilo. Our room was spacious and the breakfasts were amazing. The best part of the stay though had to be the time spent in conversation with our hosts Barbara and Gary. This is one of those places you just don't... More
