Let me first address the "too many rules". It can at the beginning be a little off putting, but when you consider the age of this home and it's original floors, doors, windows etc. You have a deeper appreciation for wanting to help maintain it's beauty. Rowing suitcases across 100+ year old wood floors is not the thing to do.... More

I should preface this review by noting that my wife and I have had negative experiences at a couple of previous B&Bs and perhaps that biases this review. In any event, this summer, while traveling around the Big Island we decided to try the Shipman House. There are limited hotel options on this quieter side of the Big Island and... More

I am so sorry you felt this way. The Shipman House is on both the state and national historic registers, a living museum, and we do have some basic house rules to protect it. These are stated on the website, in our initial correspondence, and in our confirmation letter...No shoes, No smoking, Nothing that burns, and Please do not roll... More

Hilo itself, in my opinion, was not my favorite. It's very rainy, has a lot of homeless people in town, and not much to do. However the Shipman House Bed & Breakfast was a lovely place to stay and the hosts were very gracious and knowledgeable. The breakfasts were amazing: a huge tray of at least 7 different kinds of... Aloha Nikki, and thank you for the review. Yes, it was a particularly wet week, but the lush vegetation sure enjoys the rain, and it keeps the waterfalls full. Thanks for the heads-up on the bed, too...will take care of that. No, Hilo does not have much night-life, but it is central to so much sight-seeing. We hope to see... More

We stayed 2 nights in this beautiful, historic home. The room was in the guest house and was quiet and private. The grounds are beautiful, the breakfast exquisite, and the hosts charming. I highly recommend this beautiful home.

We stayed in the room with it's own bathroom (Auntie Carrie's Room) and it was beautiful - we should have stayed another night or two! The highlight is the breakfasts which were one of the best we have experienced, if fresh local fruit and home made muesli & jams interests you - no fried bacon and eggs here! It is... More

As others have commented, upon arrival it feels like I was back to being a little kid again being instructed about all the house rules. The rules themselves are not so onerous; it is more the delivery that is off putting. Mostly they just want to protect their wooden floors given all the gritty sand and volcanic stones that are... We spent 2 nights in Aunt Clara's Shell room. The house is amazing, full of beautiful architectural detail and interesting furnishings. Our room was large and comfortable, with 4 massive windows overlooking jungle foliage and Hilo Bay. We viewed beautiful sunrises both mornings from our windows. There was a closet with a very small refrigerator, the bed was comfortable. There... More

We only had a one night stay in the cottage with adjoining rooms and thought the place quite charming. Everything worked fine and the breakfast of fresh fruit and home made breads and cereal each explained by the host very special. Hilo itself is a quaint and charming place and this B& B was delightful. Would love to return to... More

Barbara and Gary treated us like family. We can not say enough good things about them and their beautiful home that they welcomed us into. The breakfast is truly amazing. There were so many unique fruits we had never heard of and they carefully took the time to explain all of them to us. I couldn't get enough of the... More

We were coming from the more typical Hawaiian resort Kona side before coming here. Shipman house belonged to the current owner's great grandfather and the house is steeped with history, family furniture, portraits, china, antiques, art. The garden is lush and provides the morning tropical fruit platter (guavas, papayas, lychee fruit, egg fruit, water apple, pomelo). Being on the edge... More
