We found this place by chance. Very pleasant surprise. Nice hosts and great views. Breakfast was very good too. Unfortunately we only had one night to spend here. If we return to this part of the big island we would definitely stay here again.

My friend and I spent 3 nights Hale Kai HAWAII B&B. The rooms are attractive and comfortable, with a view of ocean and garden that can't be beat. The breakfast is served upstairs buffet style on a broad lanai with an even better view, including local surfers. And the food is delicious. I still think about Maria's homemade marmalade and... Stayed at Hale Kai some time back, don't expect modern rooms or fancy decorations but the location and great breakfasts are hard to beat. We stayed in the Bamboo room as it's the last one along the path so you do not have other guests walking past. At breakfast we could see whales out at sea. Would we stay again... More

My husband and I stayed here for a night and really liked the location- right outside of Hilo, comfortable neighborhood, and on the water. Superb whale- watching right from the lanai outside our room! Very comfortable accommodations, immaculate though a bit dated. Great breakfast with super fresh local fruit and delicious pancakes. Hosts were really friendly and eager to offer... More

Hale Kai is one of those B&Bs that feels more like a friend's home rather than a plain business. I stayed with my husband at the Heritage Room and we really enjoyed our time there. The room was very comfy and the views right outside our door were incredible! There's blue skies and ocean almost anywhere you look - this... More

We had 8 nights here in the Pele suite. it was used as a base to see the sites in the area. Rick and Maria were the best of hosts, with Rick giving the best advice on snorkelling for my wife and places to eat and visit. Their breakfasts were amazing and served up stairs on their balcony at a... More

We started our trip on the Big Island here and liked it so much, we ended our trip here, as well. The bed was the best we've experienced in years and to go to bed with the sliding door open and hear nothing but the sound of the surf could not be beat. The owners are friendly and accommodating and... More

My husband and I stayed in the Moana room for 2 nights a few weeks ago. The room was a nice size and the bed comfortable, ocean view superb. Do not expect a super modern slick room, but we felt it was clean and very pleasant. There are 2 chairs on the balcony... there is a divider between the rooms... More

My husband and I stayed at the Hale Kai Hawaii Bed & Breakfast for 3 nights. We stayed in 2 different rooms; the Moanna room on the first night and the Bamboo room on the 2 remaining nights due to availability. All four rooms available are set in a row on the lower level of the house and open up... More

Our first trip to the Big Island and Hilo was fantastic. Ric and Marie were great hosts. They offered a list of their recommended things to do and the list was right on for what we wanted to do. Breakfasts were great. Information from Ric was great. Room was hot but the island was going through a heat wave when... More
