My husband and I stayed in the Moana room for 2 nights a few weeks ago. The room was a nice size and the bed comfortable, ocean view superb. Do not expect a super modern slick room, but we felt it was clean and very pleasant. There are 2 chairs on the balcony... there is a divider between the rooms... More

My husband and I stayed at the Hale Kai Hawaii Bed & Breakfast for 3 nights. We stayed in 2 different rooms; the Moanna room on the first night and the Bamboo room on the 2 remaining nights due to availability. All four rooms available are set in a row on the lower level of the house and open up... More

Our first trip to the Big Island and Hilo was fantastic. Ric and Marie were great hosts. They offered a list of their recommended things to do and the list was right on for what we wanted to do. Breakfasts were great. Information from Ric was great. Room was hot but the island was going through a heat wave when... More

We stayed here for four nights in October. The views from the room was incredible. Maria serves a wonderful breakfast that changes every day. It was great to chat to other people staying there at the breakfast table each morning. The rooms aren't modern but they were clean and the bed was really comfortable. Staying here was a welcome change... More

Rick was very unfriendly to us during our 2 day stay. Do not expect Rick to be around to help you cart your luggage up and down the many stairs. Maria was more friendly and her breakfasts were very good. Rooms were extremely hot with a tiny ceiling fan that did not put out any air. Our host did not... More

We stayed at the Hale Kae for three nights. The home is situated upon a cliff such that you look out, from your individual patio, over beautiful gardens at the Pacific and Hilo Bay. The sunrise is spectacular. Maria and Rick are friendly, informative hosts. Breakfasts are amazing and make use of locally sourced ingredients. Guests sit on the lanai,... More

We had a great experience at Hale Kai. We travelled with another couple & had adjoining rooms. We enjoyed chatting with Rick & Maria at breakfast, as well as meeting the other guests and comparing notes on what to see in the area. Rick has put together an excellent list of "must see" spots in the area. We liked the... More

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Hale Kai Hawaii B&B a few weeks ago. What a wonderful place! The room was spacious, the view spectacular and Ric, our host, was most accommodating. Breakfasts were delicious, and conversations were flowing. It was our first time on the Big Island, and Ric was very helpful and willingly answered all our... More

This is a really homey, comfortable place to have as a base of operation for Hilo and eastern Hawaii. Maria and Rick and their cat and dog are terrific hosts. They are extremely accommodating. Since I was sleeping in late every day, they were nice enough to make a fruit plate up for me that was waiting for me in... More

The Hale Kai Hawaii is a wonderful bed and breakfast set on a cliff above Hilo Bay It would be difficult to find a better place to stay in Hilo. We arrived late at night, so the directions from the airport provided by the B&B, were very helpful. We had an amazing view of the full moon on the bay... More
