Me and my friend made the reservation for the hostel online. Hostels website is still online and reservations can be made. They are taking the full payments for the accommodation. When we arrived there hostel was closed. Neighbours told us it's been closed for 3 months already.

Me and my friend had a reservation for the 15th september (made in august) and we paid directly via their website and paypal for the beds. The confirmation was sent and yesterday as we arrived we found out that the hostel was abandoned and closed ... and nobody told us anything. We lost the money for one night and had... More

I stayed there for few nights and I had a great time. Jered saved for me the bed I asked, was patient and helpul. He knows a lot about the island and gave me great tips. The locations is amazing but you still need a car to get around. The volcano- 45 minutes drive from there Rainbow falls- 5 minutes... More

Originally, I planned to live in the dorm, but the only bed available was either on the top bunk or a very creaky spring mattress near the door. The following day, I opted to upgrade into the private room and it was much more comfortable and worth the extra $30. Free breakfast is a plus, and the location is so... More

This hostel is clean, relaxing and comfortable. The guy on reception was really laid back and made us feel very welcome. It's a good location near the tsunami museum and a little cinema. Would definitely go back!

The moment you walk through the door of Hilo Backpackers you become part of the family. Jared (aka my hero) greats you with friendly smile but the service doesn't stop there. He is a goldmine of advice for what to do on the big island. We intended to spend only 1 night but ended up staying 5. We hung out... More

I have stayed in many places and only now I'm taking the time to write a review because this guys deserve it. Really nice ambience, the tours are great, etc. Totally recommended !. You can't miss the volcano national park tour and Jared is a great guide!

Had a good stay at the Hilo backpackers hostel. Stayed for 5nights. Should have Done more research though and booked a few days on the other side of the island. The rooms are clean, good pressure in the showers. Nice open spaces, good common area. It would have been nice to be able to bring food and drinks up to... More

This story is very difficult to tell politely, but I will do my best. I made my reservation on November 5, 2014, and emailed the hostel directly to double check that my space was confirmed. They confirmed on November 7, 2014. My purpose was to attend Merrie Monarch, a large scale hula competition which fills Hilo with thousands of guests,... More

The hostel is clean and spacious. In a great location for volcanoes if you have a car otherwise your pretty screwed. Giving 3 stars as when i read the website for this hostel on the main page it said free tours for those staying 3 or more consecutive nights. I don't mind paying of course but would of been nice...
