This story is very difficult to tell politely, but I will do my best. I made my reservation on November 5, 2014, and emailed the hostel directly to double check that my space was confirmed. They confirmed on November 7, 2014. My purpose was to attend Merrie Monarch, a large scale hula competition which fills Hilo with thousands of guests,... More

The hostel is clean and spacious. In a great location for volcanoes if you have a car otherwise your pretty screwed. Giving 3 stars as when i read the website for this hostel on the main page it said free tours for those staying 3 or more consecutive nights. I don't mind paying of course but would of been nice... This is a great hostel if you are familiar with staying at hostels. If you are expecting an experience like the Hilton, then you should probably go pay Hilton prices and stay there. Yes, breakfast is minimal, but it's free, and you can always go somewhere else within walking distance if you need something more substantial. There is Bear's Coffee,... More

Hostel is ok for a night or two. Supermarket is close, rooms are clean, beds are shaky, so if the one on top moves all is moving. No kitchen just a few kitchen items. Free (portioned) breakfast (one coffee/tea and 2 toasts, a fruit per person) is ok but nothing special. Free Wifi and luggage storage is a plus. Really... More

This place is spacious! Lots of downstairs hangout area. Seems like they just move beds around depending on what is needed - because there were 4 of us total, they moved us all into a room together which was nice. Jared was really awesome and very helpful! Only stayed 1 night, as we were just passing through. but really enjoyed... More

Stayed about 4 days. Lots of amenities if you want to cook in, pack and create lunch, etc for your adventures. Snorkling and other water supplies available for usage. Breakfast was minimal toast, fruit and coffee but FREE and certainly will get your day started. The place was detail cleaned everyday I was there. It was very safe and secure... More

Hostel is well located, clean and secure, but Hilo isn't a big town. We stayed there for 2 nights (Mauna Kea, Akaka Falls, Volcano National Park) before going to the west side of the island. Staff (Jared) was very helpful and present. Gave us good recommendations and even recorded Game of Thrones finale for us! Atmosphere in the lobby was... More

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in a private room which was very large & clean. The free breakfast was 3 slices of toast and jam and fruit - very tasty and filling. The location is great with a car - close to Mauna Kea, Waterfalls, Macadamia Nut Factory and Volcano National Park. There are also a... More

The Hilo Backpacker's Hostel is one of my least favorite hostels I've stayed at. The reason why this is so is because this hostel is kind of a "no shoes allowed inside" kind of hostel. With that said, since it's a backpacker's hostel everyone has probably been backpacking all day. All that walking around and all the shoes being left... More
