HI all, Others told us not to go to Hilo cause it rains there all the time. We were there 4 days with no rain at all (in February). The Pakalana Inn is perfectly situated right in the heart of shopping, farmer's market, and easy access out of town to Volcano and other sights. Neal is very quick to meet... More

Neal is single-handedly the best part about this quaint hotel. He was extremely quick and friendly with booking our room at short notice, explained the property thoroughly, gave great food recommendations, and even brought us a little welcome gift upon our arrival! The rooms feel like small apartments, and the only negative I have is the lack of air conditioning.... More

The room was beautiful and the communication and booking was very easy and friendly. Thank you! No a/c which was fine because there was a great fan and big windows, but as mentioned in other reviews that meant the street noise was high. We happened to hit a lovely night - warm and still, and there were lots of parties... More

If your looking for a little place to call "home" for a few nights while in Hilo, The Pakalana Inn is it! It is so cute and comfortable and has the amenities you need for a few night stay. Neil the owner was very helpful in communicating the check in process well before we arrived, so it made it easy... More

The room was lovely, great beds, linens, nice bathroom, very convenient, keyless entry was convenient. Long hairs in the walk in shower made me pause, but everything else was spotless. The room was quite warm, and didn't cool off until the middle of the night. As it was warm, we didn't pull the shades or curtains, leaving the room open... More

I recently stayed at the Pakalana Inn for two nights during my two week trip around the Big Island. I would totally recommend staying both on this side of the Island and in the Volcano area if you are on the Island for more than one week to be able to fully enjoy these areas as opposed to long day... The keyless entry system was really nice, so I could come and go as I needed, even when the business downstairs was closed. I had my own reserved parking spot behind the building, and it was located right downtown, close to a grocery store, the Oceanside, lots of shops to walk to, and the famous farmers market! There are a... More

The last review seems unfair and greatly exaggerated ... anybody whose been anywhere can knows that homelessness is a universal issue in every town, city, and neighborhood. During my stay there were no "homeless sleeping in the streets" (unless you count the coqui frogs). Pakalana inn gives you a REAL Hilo experience which I enjoyed. Note: Sure, Hilo isn't known... They did not say anything in their advertisements about being located in the center of the homeless community. So, be sure you take enough cash to pay the begging addicts and boozers outside the hotel. I would recommend restricting your nighttime activities if you decide to stay here

We loved the relaxed downtown location right near farmer's market and the funky downtown of Hilo. The room was clean with fresh flowers. Loved the way it felt like it was our own apartment, no intrusions from "staff". Paul's Cafe has delicious food. Loved the vintage vibe and cozy rooms. We could store the fresh food we bought from farmer's... More
