I booked this hotel thinking that all rooms were newly renovated and especially since it is one of the biggest hotels in Hilo. Upon being checked in by a stoned faced unfriendly front desk clerk I requested a renovated room and she promptly told me that she would have to charge me $50 more per night and that they were... more

This is an OK place. I would stay here again, though I think I'd look around at other places pretty carefully. The renovation is underway. They are putting a lot of money into it, but some of their efforts are misguided. They are tiling everything. The tile is very pretty and low maintenance in this humid environment, but it is... more

Most of the reviews of this hotel complain about things that have to do with high-end resorts. Guess what? There are NO high-end resorts in Hilo! This is a flashback to the 60s town. If you want high-end, stay in Kona with the rest of the tourists. If you are trying to escape the crowds and relax, go to Hilo.... more

My husband, daughter (13mos.), and I just returned from a week long trip on the Big Island. We're kamaaina's (locals) visiting from Oahu and we just wanted to relax and get away from all the hustle & bustle of Honolulu. Well, that's exactly what we got! We were doing (1) night in Kona, (1) night in Hilo, and the remaining... more

We had a wonderful, updated room at the Naniloa, with a beautiful view of Hilo Bay. The problem here is that the previous managers let the Naniloa go to pot. New owners bought it 2 years ago and are in the process of renovation. As I said, our renovated room was beautiful, but the lobby and the hallways are very... more

Sadly, hotels in Hilo stink. I think they suffer from the problem that no one goes to Hilo b/c the hotels stink - so the hotels stink b/c no one goes to Hilo. (Ok, some people do and they're forced to stay in dirty, outdated properties.) I wasn't hopeful when I went to Hilo recently, but I'd heard rumors that... more

Bait and switch on the booking: a maid said they planned to leave the bottom 3 floors unrenovated. They're so dilapidated you probably won't stay in them, but they'll put you on the renovated floors (4-9) for an extra $25-40 per night. Main areas of hotel are a shambles, carpet so filthy it's almost funny. All CLOSED are the spa,... more

My boyfriend and I had planned to stay on the Hilo side for two nights. We didn't have reservations so we picked the Naniloa since the Hilo Hawaiian was full. The external hotel facade was not impressive as we drove up. My hopes were lifted after seeing the beautiful view from the lobby. The young man that helped me wasn't... more

I stayed there between November 2 and November 7 2007. I had been forewarned that the hotel was old and undergoing renovations and that you needed to book a renovated room. I did that over the net but on arrival discovered that they had booked me into an unrenovated room. I told them that I wouldn't stay in an unrenovated... more

I am a Hawaii resident (Oahu) and I was looking for a decent hotel in Hilo. This is no small feat since Hilo hotels are notoriously under par. We booked our room through priceline for $74 for the night. After spending the day with a local couple visiting the Waipio Valley (which I recommend) we decided to pay the $22.00... more
