The room is very spartan but exceptionally clean. A very friendly housekeeper who is a professional keeps the commode and shower stall sparkling clean on a daily basis. The towels are white, very fresh, and exchanged daily! There is ample hot water that washes away your fatigue in no time 24/7! The dining room is reminiscent of the old plantation... More

This is the best deal on this side of the island. We stayed for 2 days and loved it. The rooms are a bit on the older side, but they are clean. The staff was so great!! Overall, the hotel had great character and beautiful gardens on the property. Very close to the botanical gardens. The pork chops in the... More

Clean, friendly, efficient, cheap. The Japanese family running this place has been making it go since 1917, and it's pretty impressive. We were very pleased. We paid $65/night... In Hawaii that's a total steal.

We stayed here for two days. Overall great choice. There was an amazing view from our balcony. It was close to Kona and the coffee farms and Portuguese bread making and the local botanical gardens ACROSS THE STREET! (highly recommend both!) There was a great garden and great landscaping and lots of chickens so it was a charming little place.... More

This is a great hotel for people with a more simplistic mindset. The decor isn't fancy, there wasn't a TV in our room - really, no frills, but we still loved it. It was surprisingly cheap for an ocean view room, and the view is GORGEOUS, not to mention the grounds themselves are beautiful. Staff is friendly, but we weren't... More

You'll either love or hate this hotel. It reminds me of the great road-side lodges of Alaska. Lots of old-world history, charm and character. I loved it here. We stayed on the first floor, at the end giving us a nice view of the ocean. Simple / Basic room but clean and quiet and very reasonably priced ($65). Free wifi... More

I stayed in the communal-bath streetside part of the hotel. Bedbugs weren't immediately obvious as the room was small but clean, and the sheets were fresh; but night fell and out they came, unmistakable. There were two beds in my room and they were in both. The staff was genuinely concerned, and as I didn't hear about this problem in... More

The Manago is old-fashioned Hawaiian with a warm, friendly atmosphere. The rooms are a good size, very clean, and quiet. Our lanai was very comfortable and private with a beautiful view of the gardens and the ocean. There are no TVs or telephones or air conditioning in the rooms. But who wants to watch TV when there is a sunset... More

My husband and I have stayed in the Japanese Suite twice - once in May 2010 and once in June 2011 for our wedding. The view from the window of the ocean is beautiful. We absolutely love the deep soaking tub and the futon is surprisingly comfortable. We've also stayed in the regular rooms. Captain Cook is much cheaper to... More

Having grown up on Oahu, many of the hotels I'd stayed at on the Big Island felt like they were full of tourists. Manago Hotel was the first place I stayed where I felt the local Hawaii vibe the minute I walked through the door to check in. True, this place is not a luxury hotel by any means--there are... More
