We stayed here for our anniversary, looking for a nice, quiet, quirky spot from which we could jump off into the Bighorns for hiking. We booked 2 nights for the Cottonwood Suite well in advance, and the weekend found us driving to Buffalo in a snowstorm. We checked into a wonderful hotel. I really liked it a lot. The furniture... more

Upon arrival we walked into a dimly candlelit lobby and noted several people in Western attire, a few with holstered sidearms. For a moment I wasn't sure what year it was or what we had stumbled into. The desk clerk waved us over and asked if we wouldn't mind stepping into the bar until the wedding was finished. Power was... more

We really enjoyed our brief stay at the Occidental. It certainly is historic and beautifully restored. The owners and their staff were exceptionally welcoming, considerate and helpful. They were more than willing to spend time telling us about the building and the stories associated with it. The restaurant attached to the hotel was a real bonus - great food and... more

My husband and I stayed here on our 10 days out west adventure. We only stayed one night but it was grand. We stayed in The Teddy Roosevelt Suite. I agree with the other reviews. We greatly enjoyed this place. We also ate at the Virginian Restaurant and it was wonderful also. Not to be missed. The only slight negative... more

My daughter and I stayed here one night in the Clear Creek Suite. It was beautiful with many interesting historic touches. We especially liked the old radio which you could tune to vintage music. The doors of unoccupied rooms are left open so that you can look at them. Service was friendly and helpful and the restaurant was also very... more

The Occidental Hotel is a real window into the old west. The current owners have painstakingly renovated this hotel over the past 12+ years. It is truly steeped in history and is a great place to stay. I would have to say you would be hard-pressed to find a "modern" piece of furniture in this hotel. We stayed in the... more

We spent a night in the Herbert Hoover Suite. The hotel is historic and is as much a museum as it is a hotel. A saloon and fine dining establishment (The Virginian) are next door. The hotel is exquisite, the staff friendly and there is so much to see and gawk at. The only downside of the hotel is that... more

Its old, its fascinating, it has great staff, it creaks a little (all part of the character) and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. We had to stay somewhere on our way between South Dakota and Montana. By pure luck we picked the Occidental Hotel. We were lucky and arrived on a Thursday when all the locals bring... more

This was a highlight of our 3 week trip west. We arrived early, the staff was helpful and personable. They were full of suggestions and knowledgeable and seemed to take pride in their hotel. The rooms' doors are left open before arrival, and guests are encouraged to "tour" the rooms and suites. We wandered the halls, looking at the memorabilia,... more
