We stayed with friends in one of the houses, we enjoyed it a lot, plenty of space to have dinner, comfortable beds. Almost everything in the description was included: kitchen appliances, linen, wi-fi. They have coffee machine but you need to bring filters with you. The place was very clean. The big downfall was that there was only ONE hand... More

Make the trip up the mountain was outstanding, great views, fall leaf peeping at its best. Our trip was about five half hours with three stops to meet other trains. The trip included A hobo bag lunch which was very enjoyable. Everybody in our party which included young kids enjoyed themselves on the trip. In my opinion has to be... More

A retired lumber town with all the leftovers; company houses for rent, company store, hometown restaurant, art gallery with items by local artist only, and the main attraction; a steam locomotive powered by coal to take us up the scenic railroad to a mountainous top and back down again. Beautiful mountian views, mist rising from the valleys and sun warming... More

Staying in one of the railroad company houses was certainly a highlight of our trip. The house itself is very quaint and well maintained. Certainly, it is not a five star resort but that's not what you're there for. Super tiny bathroom. If those walls could talk, I'm sure the stories would be worth listening too. Staying in the home... Riding a Shay locomotive up the Mountain was fun and educational. All of the buildings were well maintained and the staff was pleasant and helpful. Experiencing the switchbacks was something I had never done. The train crew was terrific. Loved every minute of the trip.

This precious location has to be good, my family has been coming here since 1975 and has no plans to stop. A mecca of sight and sound and smoke, with plenty of each. We now rent the company mill remodeled village houses during our stays, however so quant. The sounds of Shay's 4, 5, and #6's are fabulous as the... More

This is one of my favorite places. The train ride is so much fun. Went as a child and now taking my grandchildren. The train ride will get you a little sooty but the views more than make up for it. There is a place to buy food and drinks at the top. The open trains expose you to nature... More

Great place for family. We camped in the forest the night before and it was so reftesting and cool. The drive into the state park was perfect. Small road with lots of waterfalls all around. We did the 2.5 hour ride and for my young ones it was enough. If I traveled with just my wife I would do the... More

We rented a three bedroom company house in the village just down the road from the Cass train station. The old wooden house was simply furnished with all the kitchen supplies you would need to cook and sleeping beds for 6. A BBQ and picnic table was provided outside. The highlight of the stay are the two train rides -... More

We rented one of the company houses for a long weekend. It was much nicer that a hotel and we were on the state park property. If you are expecting a pristine modern house then this is not for you, but if you want to step back in time, you're in the right place. The homes are stuck in time... More
