We rode the Amtrak Empire Builder train to the Bingen-White Salmon station. Bingen School Inn (aka Columbia River Gorge Hostel) is 7-8 blocks from the Amtrak station. We rented the family room (room #4) that had 2 queen beds separated by a wall plus a twin bed. Our room also had a small refrigerator and table & chairs. The classroom... More

I absolutely loved staying here.....what a unique experience....this is an old school that has been converted into a hotel.....there are school lockers along the hallway that you can put your stuff in (with a lock)......you sleep in the classrooms which the chalk boards on the walls so you can leave messages for your friends or other visitors......although most of the... Accommodations are basic -- I stayed in a private room, the bed was comfortable but the fluorescent-fixture-from-school-day-hell was a bit much and a small lamp would have been a nice touch. The room even had the cranky Venetian blinds and windows that MY school had :) The female bathroom was very cold and the space heaters did not seem to... More

Across the Columbia River from the more well known city of Hood River, Bingen is a small town with not much to call attraction to it (outside of being in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge). It was here, though, we were able to find what appears to be the only hostel in the Gorge. Located in a historic school house... More

I think this one takes the prize for the strangest hostel of my North America trip. As advertised, it is in an old school house. And with lockers in the hallway, and the concrete base showers, it sure did feel like I was sleeping in a school. I was there in the off season, so I was upgraded from the... More

The Columbia River Gorge Hostel is in general great value for the price. We paid around $50 for a private room for a family of 4, traveling with 2 young children. The hostel is super basic, with shared bathrooms and kitchen area which is well equipped. Everything was very clean but some of the areas had a weird smell to... More

This hostel is located in the interesting old school building--so there's the air of mystery about things--there're still artifacts from past use on display around the hostel--like a microscope, typewriter--at the same time rooms are remodeled and very updated/comfortable. It was very quiet and one can get great sleep/rest here. There's huge gymnasium to be used and a big kitchen... More
