Planning our trip I agonized over whether or not we should spend so much money to stay at Bussaco Palace. Our tendency toward more modest and budget travel (I try to keep us under $100/night) combined with mixed reviews and very few special offers available for our travel dates really gave me pause. Finally, based on some of the forum... More

In the middle of a beautiful forest in central Portugal is a Palace built by a king for his own use. The palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens watered by almost daily rainfall (few hours). The lobby, lounge and dining room are stunning and manage to return you to a period that was magic. The meal we had was excellent... More

This hotel is nearly 100 years old. It is nestled in an amazing, luscious and gorgeous garden. The manueline Portuguese architecture is breath taking. This is a hotel for people who appreciate the past and want to experience it in the present. The patios, lobby lounge, restaurant and grounds are worth it! The rooms are furnished in antiques with amazing... More

With bus loads of Tourists that visit Bussaco Palace everyday one would think that more would have been done to preserve the Palace and keep it in a pristine condition - with a bit of effort this could be one of the most incredible places to visit as there is so much history that surrounds the Bussaco Palace, and it... Never stayed in a palace before. It was a special opportunity. The location in a national park is spectacular. As others have mentioned, the maintenance of the property is terrible. But the service is exceptional. The staff are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances. The grounds are maintained by a non-profit and they are beautiful. But the hotel... More

Bussaco Palace is a five star location but a two star hotel. Don't believe anything else. Actually built in a theatrical style by a set designer architect, even today it's a mirage and what goes on behind the scenes is not pretty: uniformed staff desperately tries to keep the whole thing together: the building that's in desperate need of a... Those who give this hotel poor or terrible reviews show much about themselves, little about the hotel. It's beautiful, the food is SUPERB, the staff is wonderful. Yeah, it's a step into the past. What do you want from Europe, Nashville? There are still ugly Americans around.

Bussaco was a dream. My friend and I stayed there for one night, and loved every minute. The hotel is stunning, the food and wine delicious, the staff friendly. Only complaint would be that it was quite warm in the room - but that's Europe. The hotel is off-the-beaten-path, but well worth the travel. Enjoy a relaxing visit, hike, and... More

This place takes you back in time. The decor, tha flavours and smells, everything takes you back in time. The rooms are huge - as well as the the bathrooms all in marble. But, the bed, well.. It's not that confortable, and, in my room, the heater was too warm. The room also hasn't a cable TV. It's a nice... More

Magnificent location, in a wooded national park, near the site of a famous battlefield of the Peninsular War. Secluded, with a beautiful garden. Adjoining a former Carmelite convent. Built in "neo-manuelino" style, the Portuguese version of neo-gothic. Grand drawing and dining rooms. Guest rooms vary in style and size. Shabby chic, and quite magical with it.
