Just returned from a holiday at the Riu Madeira Palace. Plenty of building work being undertaken in the resort of Canico de Baixo at the moment, but don't let that put you off. i am writing a belated review of this hotel which we visited in may 2009.this is a superb hotel all the staff are so friendly and helpful,and want to do everything for you nothing is to much trouble the facilites in the hotel are really good, two large pools and a vast area for getting your share of the sun.... more

Spent a week there and very pleased with food and staff attitude as they seem to genuinely enjoy helping you. Older clientale with the evening shows surprisingly poorly attended but as good as other places I've been. Gym needs aircon to be useful. This was our third trip to this hotel, a place that we go to totally unwind and relax. The staff at this hotel really are excellent, nothing seems to much bother to them. We stayed here from Oct. 2 till Oct 12 2009. Experienced an excellent service from all staff members. Check inn was quick and easy, room was not ready due to early arrival (9:30 am) but we had a (free) breakfast and welcome drink wile waiting. After this the room was ready for us. We stayed at the Riu palace five years ago and loved it then, which is why we returned definitely not disappointed. All of the staff cannot do enough to help and seem pleased to do so. The food is very good with plenty of choice for everyone.The free bus to funchal is well worth booking and is dead on time.... more

Excellent service throughout, apparently under constant supervision by senior management. Extremely wide selection of very good self-service food. Location is somewhat isolated, but courtesy bus to Funchal efficient and very punctual, and hire cars easily available. Do not be put off by any negative reviews about this hotel - it would be very difficult to find anything to criticise about our experience from the time we booked in until the time we left. A great hotel overall and any grumbles are very minor i.e my husband would have preferred his tomatoes at breakfast to be more well done!
