Although the hotel is a run down wreck, it is still a must for history lovers. Gran Sasso is one of the most beautiful mountains in the world with freerunning cows and wild horses on an eery but outsandingly beautiful plateau. The 25km road up from the highway is a delight for sportive drivers. For history buffs, the Campo Imperatore is... More

I visited Hotel Campo Imperatore following a day in the mountains with some friends. It was the ideal venue to have some coffee and cakes after being caught out in some heavy rain showers on our way down. It was relaxing and very good value. On leaving, I carelessly left my hat in the reception area. The hat is particularly... More

With a little imagination the grandeur of this hotel where Mussolini was rescued by the Germans in 1932 i think, can be recaptured. Its very near the observatory and we were fortunate to stay the night when an astronomer was in residence to show us the planets and stars billions of light years away. I even saw a shooting star... Mussolini spent there two weeks before being collected by the German army. You can also visit the room where he lived. All recalls these events! There are books, calendars, postcards, souvenirsfor sale. Apart from these things the staff is very courteous and efficient. The buffet is very rich as well as the breakfast ( too much?)! The rooms are showing... More

A special place worth to be discovered! Coming from a longer hike we didn't feel attracted by the external aspect of the building but were pleased with the warm welcome we received. Our room was simple but cosy and we appreciated that we were provided an electrical heating. We had an agreable dinner and breakfast with spectacular view of the... More

Wonderful situation in the mountains and the building has van interesting history. Reception area and restaurant look good. However, the standard of the rooms etc show how old the building is. The price, about 80 Euros, including dinner and breakfast, is rather high, but there are few or no other hotels in this beautiful area.
