We had paid €250 per night for bed and breakfast so our expectations were high. To say we were bitterly disappointed is an understatement. Fortunately the owner let us cancel our 2nd night without losing our deposit. Don't expect 4star accomodation...it's quirky to say the least. Our bathroom was in a garden shed located in the side of the room.... More

Couldn't have had a warmer welcome from the lady who was preparing the rooms. This 17C guard house had lots of atmosphere but was full of modern comforts- I loved the shabby chic decor and attention to detail-Our attic room wasn't cheap at 165 euros but it was perfect with antique lace and thick bath robes. We had lovely sea... More

Imagine a beautiful ancient house, renovated with excellent taste, as sharing a rich and refined family patrimony, with an outstanding sens of details. Place this house on the very end of Saint Martin harbor embanquement, in the city center, yet apart from the inevitable crowd, there you are: Le Corps de Garde is calm, elegant, refined, as your family home,... The interior is lovely, beautiful setting and with the right attitude from the owners it could be wonderful. However, we found them to be cold and unfriendly and I felt like every small request and question was a total inconvenience. In the end we dreaded any encounter with them and purposely tried to avoid them, making the whole situation quite... More

We recently stayed at Le corps de garde as part of a longer trip through France. This was the little bit of luxury we were looking forward to enjoying - we couldnt have been more disappointed! We were welcomed by the patron screaming out of her car window that we had parked in her parking place and to move immediately,... More

Wouldn't say NEVER again but.... We're regular visitors to beautiful Ile de Re and DO love the shabby-chic/quirky/individuality of the hotels/restaurants etc... Booked our 1st stay at this hotel with some trepidation after reading mixed reviews. We'd also popped in last year to check it out and were 'greeted' by Babeth who was 'cool' and unsmiley to say the least.... More

I'm surprised at the somewhat mixed reviews the Corps de Garde has. We really liked the quirky decor and our room - 'l'Oeuil du Pecheur' - was a mix of brocante-style furniture, crisp linen and swathes of silk, all done in typical Ile de Re muted greys and silvers. Breakfast was very pleasant and we were made to feel welcome... More

We booked Le Corps de Garde for 5 nights July 2009, taking three rooms, with daughters and visiting Grandad from Canada. We were advised to park just outside the hotel, the bay indicated by a young man (the son of the owners). Later we were confronted by the owner who demanded we move our car as it was his private... I see the divergence of opinion in other reviews and it is all a matter of taste. One of the pleasures of travel in France is that there are hotels that express the concept of an individual owner as well as hotels that are within a corporate business model. This is one of the former. The building is unique, the... More
