We were at the Highland for a gathering of MINI Cooper owners for a weekend drive. I was the organizer and Lisa and the staff at the Highland couldn't have been more helpful. They bent over backwards to accommodate our group. Even rescheduling their evening dinning times. They really went overboard. The place is old, over 100 years old in... more

The condition of the hotel is almost beyond belief. If it were in a more populated area, the local code inspectors would certainly close it down. Hot water in the shower disappears suddenly, wiring is exposed and all the lamps and the TV are on extension cords. The door on the room and the bathroom door didn't fit the jambs,... more

We spent a Sunday night at the Inn on one of the two hottest days of the summer. In Richmond it was 98, in Monterey it was in the low 80s with a cool breeze. Very nice. Monterey is the country seat of Highland County, or Little Switzerland as the area is known because of the high Allegheny Mountain elevations.... more

We have visited Monterey in the past and loved the town thus decided to stay in the heart of the town; the Highland Inn. Walking into the Inn we noticed that the lobby smelled damp and musty. Ok it had been rainy and the place is a century old, understandable. We also expected to see cracks and repairs etc. We... more

The dust under the beds was a great concern to our housekeepers who take care of the Inn as if it was there own. We did find two of our less rented small had some dust under the beds that had been overlooked. We inspected all showers and baths and could not find any mildew. Our summer has been pleasantly...

This is just a warning. We had stayed at the Highland Inn earlier for a college geology trip. And we had eaten at the restaurant even earlier for the same reason. Since we loved the little town of Monterey, we made reservations at the Highland Inn in Oct., 2007. Surprisingly, we got a room with a king bed and a... more

Our stay at the Highland Inn was a wonderful belated honeymoon. We stayed the weekend of "WinterTide" 2008 and it was almost story book. We had the Inn pretty much to ourselves for 4 days. If I didn't know better I would say that they even ordered the snow on Saturday just for us. The room was a bit cramped,... more

During our vacation to the mountains West Virginia we decided to make a slight detour and stop at the Highland Inn for a nice Saturday dinner. I ordered the Trout Amandine and my wife the broiled trout. Both entrees were delicious and were done to perfection. Our waitress was very attentive and was always there to refill our drinks. After... more

I have been very impressed with the Highland Inn over the years and have stayed there every year while in the area visiting friends. It is a true historic survivor for those who love antiques and old architecture, its like stepping back in time to a happier, kinder time. All the staff members seem to not be able to do... more

After some confusion whether or not my wife and I actually had a room for a busy weekend, (I booked almost a month in advance), we settled into our room. The place had a heavy odor of cleaning supplies and I honestly did not find the Highland Inn very hospitable. Lisa, the property manager, seemed not to care about my... more

It is very distressing to hear that these guests did not enjoy their stay. We are proud of the fact that negative comments are so rare that they take us a little by surprise. Our Innkeeper Lisa has such a kind heart that it is difficult to understand how she could come across as not caring of a guest concerns....

We stayed one night at the Highland Inn over the Labor Day Weekend. The Monterey, VA area is full of beautiful scenery and quiet country living. The Inn itself is historic and is very quaint, although not updated. The room (Queen size bed) was small. After the bed and dresser, there was very little space and it felt cramped. The... more
