The Highland Inn gave us a very relaxing and quiet night. The bed was quite hard, but surprisingly comfortable and the room was clean and small but cozy. We were very sorry we had already eaten as we heard the dinners there were excellent but we did enjoy the continental breakfast. The Inn is charming but does need some updating.... More

The owners, Gregg and Debbie Morse are always gracious hosts whenever we come to visit Monterey. The dinners and buffets in the restaurant are always very good and Chef Lisa makes a delicious trout amandine as well as tasty desserts. In regards to the decor and painting...with today's economy they are doing the best with what they have to work... More

The Highland Inn is an historic hotel with a lot of character/charm and potential but really needs a makeover to get it where it needs to be. The floor of our room (and perhaps others but don't know) listed a few degrees to starboard as did that entire end of the hotel floor but I can't say that impacted on... More

Thanks for the review. This year has been a major push for us to get some updating done. We have repainted and redecorated our lobby and dining room and guest parlor. We did have to put off some of these projects over the last few trying years. Right now we have repaired cracks and repainted the first floor and have... More

Forget about the previous reviews that complain about no elevator, or no A/C. It's only 15 steps to your room, and it's 47 degrees at night in July!!! This place is old world Victorian charming. Everything from the outside view to the formal staircase leading to the rooms. We live in Bon air, and this place would fit right in... More

Thanks for the review! We have guest books in our lobby with volumes of nice comments but it is always good to get feedback online. No one sees those old books! We have to agree, Monterey and the old Inn are a charming place to visit. We hope you get out our way again. More

I stayed in a room with a full bed for two nights during the third weekend of July 2013. First the good: my stay was relaxing (especially watching thunderstorms go by sitting on the second floor porch), my room was clean, service was decent, the inn itself is quite interesting and full of turn-of-the-century character, and dinner was good. Quite... More

Thanks for the review! We appreciate the feedback. We have had such regular thunderstorms that all of our doors are swollen! Sorry yours was hard to open. I did have to investigate the breakfast being late and found it did indeed open at 8 am instead of 7:30. It is rare for that to happen, I guess maybe twice a... More

My husband and I are from Virginia Beach. We were taking a short trip to the mountains and planned to make Monterey and the Highland Inn one of our stops. When we arrived at the Inn, we were greeted rather coldly. We explained that we interested in staying overnight and asked if we could see a room. The response was... More

I am afraid this is mostly true, although maybe not in the order mentioned. We get walk-ins who come to our Inn and ask for rooms and after telling us what kind they are interested in, we will show them rooms if they request it. It usually involves discussing rates and such. We also get people visiting our beautiful area... More

You first have to understand that this place is off the beaten path. The inn is almost like it was when Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, et al stayed here. You can almost imagine them sitting around the coal stove in the dining room and drafting the blueprint for the industry of the 20th century. It has been updated with ensuite... More

Thanks for your review. We felt it to be accurate, and your comment on comparing us to more modern chains is very true! We try to get the basics for expected conveniences but we definitely are 108 years old and will never fit that mold. We hope you enjoyed your stay! More

We have stayed here off and on for many years and would not stay anywhere else unless they did not have room for us. The public areas and guest rooms are beautifully appointed with period furnishings and the staff is a perfect match with the beauty of this historic inn as they provide warm and attentive service and treat you... A beautiful and lavishly appointed inn located in rural Virginia. When you open the door, it is like stepping back in time. There is a lot of history within the hotel and when it was in it's era hosted several notable guests like John Philip Sousa, Irving Berlin. The buffet was nice and well priced. The dining room was not... More

This guest perceived a small problem and the staff immediately took care of it to her satisfaction. Two days later at check out, she asked for $50 to keep quiet about it in her review. The guest mentioned dust in her room. The Innkeeper went upstairs to dust the room and the guest expressed she was satisfied. The Innkeeper was... More

I love staying at this hotel. The staff is really friendly and accommodating. The food is great! I had the maple pork and it was so tender, top quality. The rooms are quirky, it's an older place, it's historic, you should expect that. Our room was comfortable, warm, the shower worked great, we had a coffee maker too. I love... More
