My husband and I stayed at this inn for a weekend of antiquing and wineries and were very pleased. The inn keepers were most welcoming and very helpful. The inn has a pub, and we were offered a complimentary beer or glass of wine, which was a nice touch. The breakfasts were wonderful -- very filling and expertly prepared. The... More

This is our go-to place now for over a decade when we come to Charlottesville. It is a wonderful property, and perfectly located off of Rt. 29 and very close to UVA and downtown. Terry and Jim are gracious hosts, and always have a fun and delicious breakfast. Another great stay.

This is our second stay at The Silver Thatch, as we will be back. Terri and Jim are welcoming hosts who know how to make visitors feel relaxed and pampered. The Inn and room are tastefully decorated in keeping with the era of the original building. The hospitality of a welcoming drink each afternoon in the Pub, the cookies, water... More

Got there later on our day of arrival and the innkeepers were very accomoidating and left our key where we could find it and get into our room. Location is not in the downtown area, so you need to drive everywhere. On the flip side, it was quite. The staff was very accomodating and friendly. The bathroom in our unit... More

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review! We very much appreciate it! After 15+ years we did close the restaurant portion of the Inn in Jan 2013 to try to have more time for travel and fun. We were confident guests wouldn't suffer since Charlottesville boasts well over 100 restaurants, the majority of them award... More

Many great things to say about this well maintained inn. * location - in a very quiet suburban development about 15 min from downtown. There is very little traffic at night or early morning - the dominant sound in the background is birdsong. * original building is surrounded by large shade trees. When we first arrived the owners gave us... More

I can't tell you how much we appreciate the time our guests take to share experiences at Silver Thatch. It means so much to us, and we thank you. Your review made me smile, as I hear birdsong each morning on my way to the Inn. What a lovely way to start our day! An extra special bonus is learning... More

Terri and Jim are so helpful and give you great suggestions while you are here. The B&B is lovely and historic without being stuffy. The rooms are really comfortable and the setting, while outside of C'ville a bit, it is so peaceful and quiet. you will get a great night's sleep! The breakfasts are really tasty and very filling. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your comments, which are very much appreciated! We're glad you enjoyed your stay, and while it's true we no longer serve dinner or our delicious Pub food (which I miss terribly!), we do offer wines, including champagnes, ports, sherries, and we offer a good selection of locally brewed and favorite beers.... ...we stayed in the largest room, The Jefferson. Room was clean, bed comfortable, a log provided first night in the fireplace and had two comfortable chairs facing it. Bottled water, cookies and peanuts were complimentary in our room. Nice soaps in the bathroom. Excellent breakfast provided with a gourmet touch. Hosts were very friendly and worked hard to make our... More

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for us! I sincerely apologize for the shortage of hot water during your stay. But the problem has been resolved. In early April the back yard of the Inn was a river, and we thought it was due to snow melt. Unfortunately, it turned out it was due... More

Our room was well appointed and the breakfasts were delicious. We were a bit disappointed that our room was not very sound proof. We could clearly hear the conversation of the guests above us until 11:30 pm and the neighbor's dog barking outside. The welcome cookies, bottled water and peanuts in our room were nice personal touches. The Inn was... More

Thank you so much for your input! It's much appreciated. The rooms in the Presidents Cottage are insulated, of course, but not to the extent a proper hotel would be. Added on in 1985 as part of the Inn, the surrounding area was much quieter so not much consideration was given to a greater level of soundproofing between rooms. Guests... More

This is our 2nd stay at Silver Thatch Inn. Terry & Jim are wonderful hosts. The breakfasts are truly outstanding! ( as well as Terry's delicious chocolate cookies & brownies...) Everything was perfect. We will return! Thanks for sharing your historic inn with us.

Thank you! And by popular demand the brownies will be making frequent appearances alongside the cookies! In the summertime, both may be joined by my fresh strawberry or seasonal fruit ice creams or sorbets as well! More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
An historic Virginia Wine Country inn, Silver Thatch began its life as a barracks built in 1780 by Hessian soldiers captured during the Revolutionary War and marched south to Virginia. This area of Albemarle County was designated by Thomas Jefferson especially for the troops to give them the opportunity to begin their new lives following the war. As wings were added in 1812 and 1937, the Inn served as a boys’ school, a tobacco plantation, and a melon farm, and home to BFD Runk, dean of men at UVA. Silver Thatch Inn offers 7 comfortable, well-appointed guest rooms, with the community pool available close by.Let us assist with dinner reservations, directions and information for Jefferson's Monticello, the University of Virginia, Monroe's Ashlawn-Highland, Monticello Wine Trail and Brew Ridge Trail to sample Virginia's award winning wines and artisan brews and hard ciders.
