My wife and I had a tremendously good time during our one-night stay. I didn't realize that it was a Relais and Chateaux hotel until our check-in. We had a Garden Suite which was lovely AND they had a bottle of Port as well a bottle of Sherry on the dresser for us, along with some fresh fruit when we... more

I have not stayed there but have visited the inn twice, once for a quick look and once for a meal. The staff was so nice and attentive and helpful on both occasions, but still professional and not intrusive; the meal was excellent, and the view from the dining room porch was lush and green. The grounds invite a leisurely... more

We checked into the Clifton for a two night getaway. The room was very nice and came with nice touches -- complimentary bottled water, fruit, sherry and port. The afternoon tea was also nice. The grounds are well kept except for the tennis court, which was in unplayable condition (despite references to the contrary on the Inn's Web site and... more

I was part of a group of four ladies who had afternoon tea at Clifton Inn, in Charlottesville, VA. The tea was served very informally in a very uninviting living room that was furnished in art deco, not befitting the setting of a lovely Southern mansion. Tea was served by the bartender and included one small scone, two slivers of... more

My friend and I stayed there last weekend. I didn't expect anything beyond a B&B - hell, the place is old. The service was excellent and the food was memorable - in fact, I don't think I've ever had a better meal when we had dinner in their dining room. Breakfast was free and very good. Drinks and food are... more

After calling the inn directly inquiring about about reservations, I booked a room and package for a romantic weekend with my boyfriend. Because the package included additional amenities I think we ended up getting a good rate for all the things we got. The staff was pleasant and polite and although we're not demanding guests, they eagerly helped with our... more

My wife and I stayed at the Clifton Inn for a local concert and to enjoy the Charlottesville area. We stayed 2 nights at the Clifton Inn to get away from the college scene and thoroughly enjoyed our stay but felt that the prices were a bit high compared to other Relais & Chateaux properties we've visited. Free Port Wine... more

Stayed at The Clifton over the New Years Eve, really liked the location - just outside town, so that was very close, but the hotel is very quiet, tranquil all most. It is set on 100 acres with great woods, trails and lakes and rivers. Our room was fine, but the bed was really great - super comfortable. Best of... more

We booked the fall promotion on the website of the hotel after recommendations from friends. The setting of the hotel is beautiful: large grounds with private lake, magnificent views and beautiful pool area. Downside: the service. When we arrived, the rooms weren't ready. When we were having our afternoon tea (included in the price and a treat), one of the... more

First the good bits - staff are fine and the setting is wonderful; we were even phoned a few days beforehand to see if we would like anything special ordering - a boquet of flowers was duly placed in the room on arrival - sadly, having lugged our bags to the room, that's where the positives end. Shabby chic may... more
