Mr. Bob Rittenhouse was a delight ! He took over the lodge from his father in 1953. We decided to stay there overnight on our way to OBX. The next morning we only had about 2 1/2 hours to Nags Head, NC. The place CLEAN, beautiful grounds, and Mr. Bob couldn't have been more friendly to us. He recommended the... More

The Rittenhouse is one of our favorite places to stay for a long weekend in VA. The owner, Bob is very friendly and makes the stay comfortable and memorable. The rooms are circa 1950's, super clean and comfortable. Each with a little patio area with which, to sit out front. There is a small walking trail by the motel as... More

We booked this room because we met up with some family members. The cost of the room was high for what you got. The spare mattress had black mold all over it. The bathroom was clean. The room also smelled of mold. Free wifi really didn't work.

After reading the reviews on the Rittenhouse Motor Lodge, we decided it would be a great place to stop on our trip south. All of the reviews were correct, It is “A little Pearl,”a “Fantastic stay,” and, most definitely “Retro for sure.” The owner is delightful. Learning I was a Northern gardener curious about Southern plants, he took me on... More

This is the cutest little place right of Route 13. It nestles in between large pine trees and a beautiful nature setting. It seems to come right out of an old movie, and it is absolutely charming, just like it´s original owner. The rooms are unique and very clean, not your usual generic motel room. We were planning to stay... More

What a great place. Tucked away on beautiful grounds with large, clean rooms and porches for chatting. Bob was a most gracious and entertaining host! I would certainly visit again and stay at the Rittenhouse!

I was leary based upon reviews, but gave it a try....very old, but clean, safe & comfortable. Beautifully situated..like a cottage in the forest. Had updated flat screen tv & wifi; no frills, but perfectly comfortable for my 2 night stay. I will stay here again....

The hotel in town was sold out and so we stayed at the Rittenhouse lodge and so glad we did. We came with our 3 kids to explore Cape Charles and Bob's nature walk was their first stop. They loved the setting and marveled at the amazingly tall trees, frogs and birds. The rooms are a little dated, but very... More

The owner himself is worth the stop! A man with a passion and his place is a work of art. If you want a place that is isolated from nature, tall and shiny, and with a pool, keep driving. If you want a setting, rest, trees that are so big you want to ask if they meet John Smith, and... More

We stayed here for the third time in Aug 2014. From the moment you pull into the Rittenhouse you know you're not at a chain motel. You are greeted by the crunch of the gravel drive beneath your tires and towering pines and oaks. The drive is lined with camillia, azalea, boxwood and holly bushes. The office reminds me more...
