Although the approach to Thann makes it seem like an industrial town, don't be put off by this; the town centre is characterful and the church is an amazing Gothic extravaganza worth a visit alone. My friends and I spent here one night during our hiking trip. Than is actually a very good point to start hiking. It's 1 day hike away from the Grand Ballon. This is an old hotel that has been thoroughly and quite stylishly updated. It is 5 minutes walk out of the centre of town, opposite the gare. We received a pleasant welcome and were shown to a large, nicely decorated room. The room was quiet despite being only metres from RN66 with massive trucks passing by. The bathroom was adequate....
