I am a frequent guest here, it's always nice and clean and a little more upscale than other places, which is somewhat reflected in the price. The furnishings are very nice and everything is in good condition. The hotel is in walking distance of the whole historic district which is one of the reasons we stay here, and there are... More

This hotel is advertised to be the oldest hotel in Texas. It has narrow stairs going to the second floor. The breakfast was good and served at the correct temperature. The lady in the dining room was nice and courteous. It would have been nice to get a cup of coffee during the day.

I visited while touring this area of Texas recently, and was impressed with the cleanliness, the courtyard, and the history of this place. Nearby is a restored rail car, lots of antique and curio shops.

We spent one night here on our way home from Arkansas. We did get a great deal with the advertised "Mid-Week Getaway" special ($69, check in after 5 and check out by 9) so that was real nice. However, the password for WiFi in our hotel's area didn't work, and the desk clerk didn't care. His response was that it... More

This stay was a return trip as we stayed at the Excelsior House 43 years ago. We spent two nights in the Victorian Room while touring Jefferson and visiting friends. The room was nice, clean and well taken care of. We truly enjoyed the breakfast offered with our room reservation each morning. Our server was very sweet and courteous as... More

Diamond Bessie room. Not a diamond. Owners have let hotel run down. Nice courtyard and very friendly staff but does not make up for dirty window sills, floors , dirty marks on doors , neglected flower beds, etcetera. Wouldn't take much to help this old place out. Heard great reviews on Claiborne B n B and Delta Street Inn .... More

Coming from Europe for a road trip through Texas, people told us to go to Jefferson, so we did. Looking for a place to stay we ended up in the Excelsior! What a nice romantic old hotel this is! We could look which room we would like and so we found room 201. We loved it. The people who work... More

At the end of a two-month tour, we often just make a pit-stop in some nondescript place with the intent of getting home as quickly as possible. The Excelsior House in Jefferson, Texas, stopped us in our tracks. The historic setting is appealing with just enough modern amenities to make the stay pleasant. We spent the evening wandering through the... More

A gift from our daughter and son-in-law, we enjoyed the same hotel visited by Ulysses S Grant and other famous people. We stayed in the Jay Gould Room and enjoyed the antique bed, the ornate wardrobe and rich decor. Breakfast was served on the sunny porch overlooking the courtyard and fountain. What a treat! The wrought iron chairs and glass... More

If you know my reviews, you know I associate the words "historic hotel" with "mean staircase", but the stairs at this hotel are mild. That's a first for me as a historic hotel frequenter. "Historic" is very applicable to this hotel. They have displays in the lobby of the hotel register books and photos from yesteryear. Very interesting. To be... More
