Our stay at the Village Hotel was truly a highlight of our trip to Romania. To have the opportunity to stay in a traditional village with the comforts of heat, running water and comfortable beds was ideal. We did not have a car and there is no local grocery store. Penny arranged meals either in the homes of the locals... More

The hosts are building a lovely place with charming old houses being set up around a central area. It's a work in progress and it definitely didn't feel done when we arrived. On the positive side, Penny is a warm, friendly hostess and the old buildings are charming looking. On the less positive side, even though we made arrangements in... More

My wife and I are at the end of three weeks travelling in Romania. We stayed in some wonderful spots along the way but the Village Hotel was extra special ... extra memorable. Hosts Duncan and Penny could not have been more attentive. We'd very happily have stayed on longer and fully intend to return one day. Staying at the... More

We ended our Romanian trip at the Village Hotel in Breb, but next time I would start there and stay for a few days just soaking up the atmosphere. The wooden houses have been charmingly restored and up-dated (electric ovens! Hot showers!) but with traditional Romanian furnishings. It's a wonderful experience to sit outside as the sun rises listening to... More

Duncan was terrific in connecting us with the locals. We spend a magical evening up in the mountains with a family of shepherds and their flock, ate delicious food, and watched the stunning sunset. What more can you ask from life?

We stayed in Casa Mica, one of several old traditional wooden houses which make up The Village Hotel. This is not luxurious accommodation by any means but it is attractive, historic and certainly comfortable. Casa Mica has a small living room, kitchen, a very steep staircase (NOT suitable for those with reduced mobility) leading to the 1st floor where there... More

Having accommodation at Village Hotel is a fantstic experience. They did a great job saving and preserving authentic traditional wooden houses from Breb Village. It is like living 200 years ago in this superb area of Maramures. The houses are decorated in a traditional style with old furniture. All facilities like shower or toilets are available. If you look for... More

Offering both affordable and luxury options, every detail has been considered, with fresh eggs and milk, lovely furnishings with local textiles and touches, wifi, knowledgable staff providing tips on the local village and surrounds. I wish we could have stayed longer!

Staying at the Village Hotel was the highlight of our trip to Romania. We stayed in Casa Pictata for 4 nights. Staying in an authentic traditional wooden home was a great experience - and very comfortable. The kitchen was fully stocked - more than enough for breakfasts and even a few lunches and dinners. The bathroom, while small, was fine... More

We stayed with Duncan and Penny, who are Brits and owners of The Village Hotel, for a birthday celebration last summer. We had a fantastic time in this thoroughly beautiful unspoilt part of the world. It is well off the beaten track and that's the attraction. The clever part is the design and finish of the authentic Romanian houses that... More
