We are fortunate in that we only live about a mile or so away, but its not often that we eat here, in fact I think the last time was a few years ago. So glad we decided to give it a go, its really is so much more than 'just a pub that serves food'. The staff are friendly... More

A group of us were staying in Newport for the cycling event at the Velodrome. The Golden Lion was recommended to us by the Hilton Hotel. They were not wrong. My husband & I arrived first and thought that one of the other couples had booked a table. The landlady/manageress asked if we had booked. We weren't sure but she... More

Came here for a few drinks on a sunny afternoon and found the staff and the decor very pleasant. This is in a very lovely location, with plenty of places nearby to park for free. We did not eat here, but certainly enjoyed sitting in the outdoor seating area to enjoy some Welsh sunshine with a cool beer.

Lovely traditional pub with a warm welcoming feel, the food was at a much higher quality than expected more like something you would expect from the top hotels in London. The staff are quite clearly trained to high standards which shows in the service that they delivered. This is a great place to dine with competitive prices, overall a fantastic... More

Although the food is nice it is expensive and the food which is ordered is suddenly not on the menu - a distinct lack of alternatives. The Service was not good - the attitude of the Manageress was offensive, supercilious, dismissive and patronising. There was a lack of concern about the issues we were experiencing - "in one ear and... More

Girlfriends and me drove a reasonablle distance to get here and it really was'nt worth the trip I'm, afraid. V expensive for what you get + not very brilliant service either? The food was okish but, the atmosphere and choice was'nt. As Goldbuddys says perhaps it was just a bad day, but we wo'nt be going back again soon

We had booked a long time ago and paid a ten pound deposit to go with our chosen meal (group booking) on arrival we were told that the menu had changed so we were unable to have our chosen meal. Very expensive, a burger was over ten pounds. We were in the upstairs room and the stairs were filthy. Would... More

OK, so the heading is a bit tongue in cheek, but the bar food is really rather good, and the staff are always busy and smiling. Not sure what the previous person meant about the manager and I should add that I don't know the chap personally but I have seen him working very hard - perhaps it was just... More

Recently went to the Golden Lion, with a friend I haven't seen in a long time. Very enjoyable evening, the food was brilliant. Although, the 3 young waitress's that were serving, who were extremely hard working, helpful and polite, were unfortunately harassed by there manager who was heard by myself and other customers shouting at the girls and reduced one...
