The Three Chimneys and The House Over-By is a restaurant with rooms in a stunning location beside the sea in the northwest corner of the Isle of Skye. Colbost is on the shores of Loch Dunvegan, a wide sea loch that opens into The Minch, the narrow stretch of sea between Skye and the Outer Hebrides. The views are stunning whatever the time of year. The restaurant has won numerous awards over the past 20 years. more » « less

What did we expect? A first class restaraunt in the middle of nowhere, they delivered. A clean modern room, they delivered. We knew it was pricey to begin with. It was our "special" night of this trip and we were quite satisfied with it. Skye is unbelievable! The weather even cooperated for a few hours. We walked along the fields... more

Restaurant The food here is first class, there can be little argument about that. All the staff are absolutely delightful - friendly without being too familiar, and professional without being too stuffy. It was really nice to see local young people involved in the organisation. The surroundings are very minimalist - dark almost, in keeping with the tradional croft theme.... more

Dear Wild-Hogg, Thank you for submitting your views about our service and accommodation in The House Over-By at The Three Chimneys. I see from our records that you were in Room 3 for 2 nights on June 30th and 1st July. I remember your arrival well on your fantastic motorbikes, but unfortunately, I must have missed your departure as I...

Firstly be warned that unless you're staying at the Three Chimneys for its restaurant you are in one of the less interesting corners of Skye. The nearest pub is many miles away, and although the coast is metres from your front door, there are more interesting places in Skye. The 'rooms' part of the Three Chimneys is a relatively recent... more

Dear Withnails, You have submitted a mixed verdict about The Three Chimneys and I am sorry that you found our rooms "bland" and "corporate". I would like to point out however, that we are NOT a stand-alone hotel and never have been. The restaurant - which I am pleased you enjoyed - has been established for a very long time...

One to avoid. Overpriced and over hyped. Average food and dated decor. more

I stayed in March and thought the whole experience was pretty mediocre. I think the rooms are way overpriced for what you get and the breakfast could have been really special but was a let down. A cold breakfast on a cold morning isn't the best idea. We were told 'firmly' that a hot breakfast was strickly off the menu.... more

Dear Huveder, Thank you for sharing your personal opinion of my restaurant with rooms. I am very surprised at some of the comments you make. We have changed our Breakfast Menu and style of service this year and the new menu has been in place since February. That aspect of your report is incorrect. As the rooms are so popular...

We had a three-night stay to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary. Our experience of the restaurant and rooms was completely positive, and I cannot emphasise enough how welcoming, friendly and pleasant the reception and restaurant staff were. There was NOTHING that had not been thought about, and we are amazed and disappointed by some of the reviews here as it... more

I was really disapointed with the hotel and restaurant. I expected it to be cosy but found it to be cold and the personnel there really werent interested in being helpful. The food was very ordinary and I wish we hadnt made the trek right over to the other side of Skye. The main town Portree has ample lovely places... more

We have recently returned from the Three Chimneys. The whole atmosphere was so wonderfully relaxing, we felt as if we'd been away a week rather than just 3 days. No need to write about the food; it's been written before and is all true (ie superb). We cannot understand some of the comments; it is very clearly stated in the... more

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights between Christmas & New Year (28th & 29th December 07). The Three Chimneys is generally good but is ruined by what can only be described as "greedy" pricing in everything from accommodation to the wine list. I will happily pay whatever it takes to secure a good holiday but... more

Dear Ben and Emma, It seems odd that you are complaining about the price of your stay here when you knew exactly what package you had bought to stay here between Christmas and New Year at an all-inclusive price. We remember who you are very well, because of your comments about breakfast, but again, you fail to mention the hot...

My wife and I stayed here for four nights on our Honeymoon in June 2006. This isnt a hotel or luxury spa - its a restaurant with rooms and reviewers should remember this. The food is absolutely fantastic in the restaurant and the rooms are spacious, clean and well looked after. I have been to some fantastic hotels around the... more
