Very much a work in progress with diggers and earth moving equipment constantly working. Mandatory lift and drop from large areas of newly seeded fairways, par 4 first hole now played as par 3 from mat and temporary green on 9th hole. Perhaps when completed this will be something special but that is a long way off and currently very... More

I will start off by saying What a brilliant round of golf! I had previously read a lot about the Machrie and was optimistic that the course still would be in good condition and be everything the good reviews stated. Although a few comments about the renovations did worry me, I booked a round for a tuesday morning. The sign,... More

We visited the golf course to find out about costs etc. What a pompous, unpleasant and unfriendly man we had to deal with. Safe to say we didn't stay or return. Would totally agree that the price was outrageous for this course.

We played two rounds on this course which is currently (and until the end of the season) undergoing major reconstruction. Several holes had "winter greens", many fairways were sanded. Lorries, diggers and other vehicles are on the course. To charge 50 GBP for this experience is not ok, half the price would be fair. I only rated the course, the... More

Mixed emotions for one, ended up with a four. The facilities is a pure disaster and even if it is closed awaiting renovations it should never have been allowed to slip this far. Mould on the walls, no food (not even sandwiches) and polluted tap water (bottled water available though). The course itself is under renovation so some of the... More

Great setting, wind-swept dunes by the beach. HOWEVER: currently (since 2014 ?) under re-development. Most holes have either temporary Tees and/or greens. Building machinery and materials everywhere, large swaths of fairways ripped open, no signs, markers etc. anywhere. Only one word for it: Horrible ! Attitude of staff hostile and downride rude (we initially were refused to come into the... More

We played this twice in cold and windy weather with a little rain both days. This course has a lot of blind shots and we used local caddies both days. We could not have played it without them. Made a couple of birdies and many pars. The course and land has been bought by a tycoon who is currently changing... More

This famous golf course is undergoing serious re-development. So if you want to play what is left of the original quirky course do so soon. We found that where the original course was still intact we had great golf holes to play but, especially in the back nine, we were playing through sand, diggers and the bones of the new... More

Visited Islay for golf on three occasions; 1999, 2001 and 2005 with a different group of friends each time. The course is indeed wonderful, although a couple of my companions objected to the blind shots. Bernard Darwin famously said that a shot is only blind the first time you play it. On one trip we played 4 days and had... More

Played early May 2014 - wonderful links course well maintained - millionaires golf! Unfortunately the facilities are 'in limbo' which may be reflecting in the staff's attitude - hostile is the only word we can use to describe the reception that greeted us. The rest of Isaly residents were so hospitable and welcoming so Machrie really letting the island down.... More
