Port Askaig Hotel is a picturesque, family run Highland Inn on the shores of the Sound of Islay, overlooking the pier at which daily car ferries berth on arrival from the Scottish mainland. Due to its proximity to the ferry, it offers easy access to Jura, Colonsay and the mainland. Our Starboard Restaurant offers Bistro style dining, with a full meal service in both bars and hot snacks available out with main meal times. Our Port Bar is the oldest licensed premises on Islay and features an excellent selection of Islay Malts and a display of old and rare bottles. more » « less

We spent a lovely 3 night break at Port Askaig Hotel. Our room was lovely. All the staff(bar, waiting and house-keeping) were friendly and efficient. The food was great and the atmosphere in the Bar was super with locals and visitors mingling well. We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone going for a holiday in Islay. more

Recently stayed at The Port Askaig Hotel during the Whiskey festival on Islay. Really I'm not a fussy person but this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Dirty doesn't even describe the state of the place and while we were there I fixed the t.v in the t.v lounge, as the tv in your room doesn't actually... more

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I paid £35 per. night for a single room and expected a warm clean room – I got neither. The radiator was cold when I got to the room and was eventually told that the switch had “tripped”, they fixed it but it wouldn’t come on till 10 PM. They brought up... more

The hotel staff were extremely pleasant and accomodating, and foolishly i thought we had hit the right button, but this did not hide the fact that the hotel, if it were an animal would have been put down years ago for having distemper. The food was "interesting" to say the least I have stayed in derelict buildings with more modern decor.... more

Being geologists, we're well used to dirt, shoddy conditions, & roughing it, but only while we're actually out in the field, NOT inside our (rather overpriced) acommodation. The self catering apartment which we spent 2 hellish weeks in clearly hasn't seen cleaning products in 40 years, never mind new decor. The state of the kitchen when we arrived was completely... more

Well , what can i say....never actually stayed in the hotel itself so cant comment. However, as a small group of intrepid Travellers and camping, we were offered a space to camp in front of the owners house ioverlooking The sound, and the Paps of Jura. we found the bar to be great fun, and a great place to chill,... more

DO NOT STAY IN THIS HOTEL! We went to Islay on a very busy weekend and no other hotel was available. We booked Port Askaig then came across the Trip Advisor reviews so at least we knew what to expect. Everyone was right, the carpets smell, the decor is appalling, beds extremely uncomfy, dirty and torn cushions which are supposed... more

I just have to respond to the other two reviews. Having stayed at the hotel twice, I have to say that the bar is one of my top 5 favourites from the many I have visited around the world. And no, I am not a drunkard. We have had some fantastic nights there and it is true you have to... more

We came to islay for a xmas trip in Dec 2004 Port Askaig is a shabby little dump the only thing nice was the staff who where great other than that the room was small with 1960's flower power carpet! the hotel smells like a chip shop gone wrong. The bar is nothing more than a cheap drinking den for... more
