On arrival we asked for 2 glasses of champagne and were told they only did it by the bottle. We ordered fillet steaks for our main courses. When they arrived the steaks looked a horrible grey colour as if they had been boiled. The veg consisted of ordinary boiled potatoes, not even new ones, carrots and courgettes. They did not... more

We had our worst meal of a 3 week holiday in this hotel, If you feel that 2 tiny rosettes of butter are sufficient for 2 people at dinner and breakfast you might be happy, these were not even the size of a wrapped butter portion. The fish available should be the finest considering the location instead we were offered... more

First impressions were good in that the ground floor has been nicely decorated with high quality furnishings, wood, slate etc, and lunch was pleasant. However, our room for the first night was a huge disappointment. It was a small and fairly dark room. Although it was dominated by a huge wardrobe at the end of the bed, this wasn't actually... more

We booked into Mackay's for 3 nights over the Easter weekend. Fiona and her staff could not have been more helpful or pleasant and gave us loads of tips for sightseeing and walking. The room was lovely, really luxurious and had an amazing feather topper on the bed, I can honestly say that we had the best sleep ever. There... more

We spent a night here while we drove along the north coast. What an amazing discovery! I don't think I have ever been in a more cozy place. The decor was wonderful and managed to have a highland flavor without making you feel like you're in a tartan fantasy- I took photos to use in decorating my own home one... more

i stayed here for two nights (and dined in for one). I had booked last minute and was warned it would mean a room change - but that was all done for me a v smoothly. i particularly liked my smaller room on the first night as it felt more cosy (the layout of the larger room didn't quite work... more

My husband and I have stayed here twice when touring Scotland and this has to be one of my favourite hotels! Everything about this small hotel is fantastic - the drive up the west coast to get there, the beautiful white beach 2 minutes along the road, the rooms are well equipped and fabulously decorated to a high standard, the... more

Durness hasn't had a great place to stay for many years which has been a pity given the beautiful surroundings. Fiona and her team have transformed a previously run down hotel into a terrific and extremely comfortable place to spend some time in the unique wilderness of North West Sutherland. Great rooms - we had numbers 1 - lovely twin... more

We have just returned from our 3rd visit to Mackay's where we had another great stay. It is unusual to find such a contemporary and cosy hotel in this part of the world. The hotel is stylish without being pretentious and the deluxe rooms are spacious with fantastic large comfortable beds. The hotel continues to improve with nice touches like... more

Stayed one night at the Mackay rooms on our week long trip in the North West, and this was by far the best hotel we stayed at. Rooms were comfortable and really nicely decorated. Liked the additional touches such as ipod in the room. Food in the restaurant was excellent as was the service. Would definately recommend to anyone visiting... more
