Turned up in bad weather with no reservation a few days before they were closing up for the winter and they couldn't have been nicer. Showed us the rooms available so we could pick. Really lovely bedrooms, very smart and modern, huge beds. Only tiny fault was that the towels smelled a little musty. Food was delicious and sitting in... more

We stayed 3 nights at Mackays during a tour of Scotland. Durness is a beautiful location and Mackays is the only hotel of it's type in the area. The food was generally good, we tried a portion of "probably the chocolate cake ever" - and it was! However the food was generally overpriced. The room was nicely furnished and the... more

We only stayed here for one night after a very, very long drive north. Mackay's Rooms is the most modern and well presented thing in Durness... it's tiny so don't expect much, but that's kind of the point of going this far north! The staff seemed polite and helpful although we were a bit disappointed to find they had lost... more

We loved this place. The rooms were cozy, comforrable and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. I would go here again in a heartbeat. It is beyond me how anyone could not rate this place highly. Also, most of the pictures on their website are outdated. They've done a big update since they were taken as far as I... more

Mackay's is good value in the beautiful village of Durness. Clean and cosy with crisp linen, i-pod ready loaded with great tracks and free and fast wi-fi. Log fires in the evening made for a cosy lounge and the restaurant - though basic and quite pricey - served home cooked comfort fare. We would definitely recommend and return. Pop into... more

We were worried about this booking, having seen reviews of the food posted earlier this summer, but we really enjoyed our overnight stay and meals. The service was excellent: we were served lunch even though we arrived late and, after a walk to the beautiful local beaches and sea cave, late afternoon drinks were no problem for the staff. Our... more

Stayed the one night here in a pleasant room which served its purpose but no more during our week long trip around Scotland. Because there seemed not to be (m)any alternative dining venues in the vicinity we chose to have an evening meal at the hotel - big mistake! With the hotel owners showering the restaurant with glowing claims such... more

This was our second stay at this hotel and we loved it, We are a young couple and were looking for a peacefull get away and certainly found it here. Food was fantastic, Rooms we loved and we were welcomed by the friendly. Yes we arrived to empty reception desk but given that they do everything themselves that surely can... more

I stayed two nights with my partner in July 2009. The location is impressive but what is sadly lacking in the establishment is a "warm welcome" , indeed we found the place souless in the extreme, no manned reception desk, no bar , no welcoming residents lounge , what passes as such is drab and dull. The food was however... more
