This is an amazing place to visit! A 20 minute ferry ride to get there. Castle is stunning, fully furnished, down to fixtures and the hardware. Grounds are georgous, make sure you walk around. The thing that sets this place apart, is you are allowed to sit on the furniture. Tea was included in the cost of the tour. Felt... More

Are you a millionaire? I'm not but we were here by invitation so I've no idea what it cost I'd guess well over £100 per head. If any meal can be worth that, then this one was. Attentive staff, incredible surroundings and wonderful food (all ten courses of it). Start saving up now and teyv to book for nest October!

We held our wedding at the castle and both Jean-Baptise and Elodie were superb. The castle has retained all the original character but has a contemporary edge. All bedrooms are special and have beautiful furniture and furnishing - best rooms have to be Canopy and Balfour. The team who support Jean-Baptise and Elodie are fabulous, professional and extremely discreet -... More

We had the pleasure of celebrating a special birthday in very special surroundings. A boat trip, even in the mist, is an exciting start to an evening out. The staff at the castle were as delightful as the surroundings. We were shown round some of the fabulous bedrooms and all wished we could afford to return and luxuriate in the... More

Its hard to put into words how magical this place is, from the boat trip, to meeting our charming host, Elodie, through to the best meal ever and having a Castle to ourselves. Oh and the Spa hidden away in the beautiful grounds. Absolute perfection in every way. Thank You.

Great example of what money can do. The castle, garden and estate shows what money and imagination can do. The magnificent gardens are still being restored to their former glory. The hand planted forest is truly an unique walk. The greenhouse was used for floral displays and fresh fruit and vegetables in the Balfour era. The castle itself is magnificent... More

On the spur of the moment my husband and I decided to see if we get reservations to eat at the restaurant at Balfour Castle on Shapinsay Island, Orkney. We were able to get them, took a taxi boat, made private arrangements to get back to the Mainland and we treated to the best meal we have ever had. We... More

Last year when we stopped in the Orkney's we toured Skara Brae, Skail House, the Standing Stones of Ennis and more that was very interesting and worthwhile. This year we were on the Silversea Silver Cloud when it stopped in the Orkney Islands and chose the ship's tour that took us by a short 25 minute ferry ride out to... More

This is a fantastic property. Magnificent architecture, and well maintained. Fascinating grounds, including the gardens where food is grown. Visited on a cruise ship tour. Would love to have stayed here (think pretty pricey). Tip: if you are on tour, try to get Nick as your guide. He is the overall farm manager and very informative. If the scones, cakes,... More

We spent night at the Balfour Castle during a month long driving holiday in Scotland & the Orkney's. Accomodation, food, extremely attentive staff were excellent. Our room was so beautiful, our bed so comfortable and the castle so amazing, it's a wonder that we ever ventured outside the Castle to explore. Golf, riding, beaches - it is a place we'll... More
