November is the time of the year when weekends in the country mean hunting for chestnuts to roast over the open fire, where the drink of choice is sloe gin and all thoughts turn to Christmas. And as temperatures slide towards the single figures, my mind turned back to my time at the world’s most northerly castle hotel, a place... More

We spent night at the Balfour Castle during a month long driving holiday in Scotland & the Orkney's. Accomodation, food, extremely attentive staff were excellent. Our room was so beautiful, our bed so comfortable and the castle so amazing, it's a wonder that we ever ventured outside the Castle to explore. Golf, riding, beaches - it is a place we'll... More

We spent one night at the castle, and felt that the service, accomodation and food was of exceptionally high service. For dinner we had the taster menu, every course was immaculate, and all the ingredients were fresh and full of flavour. The attention paid to every detail at breakfast was eqqually impressive. Our rooms were beautiful, completely comfortable, and very... More

We spent three nights at Balfour Castle in one of their better rooms. The castle and it's rooms are maintained by a small staff and the whole place looks more like someone's personal home rather than a hotel. Dinner and breakfast is served with the other guests (at the same table) in the dinning room and drinks to follow in... More

We recently got married at Balfour Castle and could not have asked for a better venue. The castle has been restored to a very high standard, with every bedroom and bathroom now decorated with beautiful antique furniture, wallpaper and accessories. Every room has a different theme, but all are cosy and welcoming, with large comfortable beds. The food provided throughout... More

The Balfour was a breath of fresh air, I have only just got around to reviewing it but absolutely excellent time. The location, service, staff were outstanding. We will be back soon, a real gem. More

I stayed as a solo traveler here, and it was incredible! The room I had was like walking back into time (down to the showerless tub in the bathroom)! I felt like a Princess. The Castle itself was a little smaller than I anticipated - but it was way cool. Fancy old rooms, even a secret passage way from the... More

This place was quite an experience. Although it is a little out of the way, it is well worth the trip. The castle itself has many rooms to explore (including a secret door!) and our room was decorated in a true Victorian style. The bed was very comfortable. Our bathroom was a turret with an excellent view of the water... More

When we booked this holiday, we did not know what to expect. The Castle was visible from the ferry as it dominates the southwest end of the Island. The peace and tranquillity offered would not suit everybody. No noisy bars or disco, no sound of passing traffic. In fact it was very hard to hear any noise from our room... More

We were greeted at the door of the castle when we drove up. There's no reception desk or other earmarks of a hotel, just a fabulous 52-room castle. There's just a few guest rooms on the third floor, but you can spend a week looking at all the fabulous common rooms and grounds. Huge comfortable library with self service honor... More
