Loved this little hostel. Mrs Brown's is very handy to everything in Stromness. The rooms and common areas are very clean and the mattresses are thick and comfy. The full kitchen, dining, lounge area is perfect for self catering. There's even a washing machine and ingenious hanging lines over the heating. All free for guests. At around £18 a night... More

Sylvia made this stay enjoyable. She was so positive, helpful, informative and eager for us to get the most out of the Orkneys. It felt we had our own tour guide. Thank you. The rooms are basic as you would expect of a hostel. But theyre clean, warm and meet the needs. Location is perfect, right in the centre, next... More

I've been coming to Brown's hostel in Winter for many years and have always had a lovely stay. It's beautifully clean, warm and cosy with lovely comfortable beds and hot water bottles - this makes all the difference in Orkney in December! Recently several of the rooms have been upgraded to include their own basins and the downstairs toilet and... More

My first days in Stromness I stayed at the campsite. As it was cold and windy, I was so happy that the Browns could host me for 3 nights. It's a lovely and cosy hostel, I felt like staying at my grandma's. Small dorms are always a plus! Here the maximum was 4 people, so I had a great nights... More

Sylvia the owner is lovely and very helpful. Yes the kitchen utensils might not match and there'll likely be a bit of a scrum for the hob if you're cooking but both the main hostel and Habourlee House are clean, warm and comfortable, and just a stones throw from the ferry terminal.

I have to say that first impressions mean nothing here. Staying here was like staying at my grans everything is a bit odd, nothing matches there are nick nacks everywhere the kitchen is large and clean but it is cosy. OK so the shower was held together with duck tape and the room tiny but the bed was so comfy... More

Susan was a lovely host, waiting for us outside the hostel we expected to stay at to lead us down the road a ways to an upgrade. We had this entire building to ourselves, a room facing the bay with a window the twin bed resident could gaze out and watch the sun rise and set. The kitchen was very... More

I stayed on the upper level in a single private room. Small but For the money you couldn't ask for more. The owner was lovely and I was very impressed with the size of kitchen come living room. The owner has made it look like a home with nick nacks on the window seals and ornaments on the mantel piece.... More

Nice landlady, great location and cheap rate but the place is damp and not very clean. There was a very unpleasant smell in the bedroom and the tablecloth of the common area needs changing. A real bathroom would be nice (not very pleasant to brush one's teeth in the toilets...) and the shower is not very inviting...

Brown's is inexpensive and for a cheap price it's not a bad place to stay. The landlady is simply lovely and will go out of her way to help you and make sure you have what you need, including advice and getting things fixed. When the internet stopped working she was there to fix it within 10 minutes! The decor... More
